I'm looking for a high end all in one printer, and no I don't want a lexmark so I hope that resolves that. I live h.p, cannon runs a bit high on the ink and it's usage. Any input into this area would be appreciated.
I was thinking about the hp 2575, it looked pretty nice with the lcd panel, and easy change ink catridges.

don't know if they sell 'em anymore, but I got a refurb hp laserjet 3015 about a year ago for somewhere around $200-ish. nice all-in-one features, good quality. i don't push it too hard so i can't tell you how it'll stand up over time, but as far as hp printers go, this one's the best i've owned (and i've owned 4 or 5).

if there's one thing i hate about all-in-ones, it's that most manufacturers focus on the inkjet variety. seriously, who makes copies using inkjet?

^i do, b&w draft is my default, runs dare i say just as fast as a laser, quality isn't as good tho.

though i would highly recommend hp for a printer for productivity

also get a document feeder, best feature of an AIO imho... i can hardly believe there are AIO's out there without it...

It really depends on what you want it for. If you're going to be printing a lot and making many copies, then I'd strongly recomend a laser like this one:

Cheaper per page, 20 pages per minute for black and white (at any quality setting.) Lasers make the best workhorse printers.

That being said, if photo printing is important to you, then this isn't the printer to get. Really though, if photo printing is actually important to you, you shouldn't be getting an all-in-one at all for that.

Oh I agree about that. I more meant the lower quality, that's all. Inkjet printers impress me with their low-cost for output, and they're fine for simple stuff. maybe i'm just spoiled by my AIO?

seriously, i agree with the statement made above about waiting until around the formal Christmas season. that's definitely the best time to get a deal, assuming you can wait. if not, i'd look around online to find a specific model you want. THEN find it as cheap as you possibly can, and then see if a local Staples, OfficeMax/Depot, etc., will price-match.

Well, in the long run yes with the massive ink costs and such, but I don't use a printer alot (well stated detective) I print out shit like coupons and contracts when I need them, and reciepts, I don't print out every fucking glowing pixel on the internet.

I had an $40 inkjet printer and got about 200 pages out of a $30 B&W cartridge before I needed another one, and printed about 2 pages per minute

I found a Samsung ML-2010 laser printer for $69 with a 1,000 page starter B&W cartridge and the replacement was $60 for a 3,000 page regular cartridge that prints 20+ pages per minute.

You tell me which one saves me lots of time and money printing out 300+ pages in journal articles a week.

i like my brother all-in-one...the quality of everything is great

my complaint? it cleans the cartridges all the time, and i go through them pretty fast

the upside? i just ordered 12 new full-sized cartridges (3 of each color) for $12.50 shipped from abcink.com

He brings up a good issue, availibility of 3rd party cartridges or refills. Refills on ink cartridges can be dodgy depending on the brand, though cartridge world does gaurantee it'll work. Laser refills on the other hand seem a little more reliable. I've refilled the same samsung cartridge about 4 times in the last 5 years and it's still going strong. 45 bucks for well over 3000 pages with toner-saver mode on? That's about 1.5 cents a page!

If you're concerned about refills like ink or toner, check out places like cartridge world first. Refills for some brands and models aren't always availible or might not be availible YET. Dell ink is usually pretty easy to get refilled, but their laser printers aren't nearly as ubiquitous. HP laserjets on the other hand are some of the most long-lived and prolific printers out there. You can get refills for anything from the ancient 2L series to the 1200 color office printers.

I think the last company I worked for had that same Dell 3110cn. If its the same model, that thing was awesome. I don't think it ever jammed on me, and color laser prints were so much better looking than anything i've ever printed out of an inkjet.

Yeah, color laser printers will print better looking color more consistently on regular or even ultra-cheap xerographic paper than an inkjet will on normal paper. It's easier to get glossy high-res photos out of an inkjet though, but it's actually more expensive per page to print a photo like that from an inkjet than to have wolf camera or eckerds print it for you (by a lot.) Also, unless you're using archival inks and paper, the inkjet photo will fade dramatically within a few years.

Laser images (and yes you CAN do high-res glossy's but you're buying a true "high-end" printer at that point) don't fade nearly as much as the toner is a non-reactive and neutral material.

^^ Haha, I wonder what incentive HP would have to convince people that remanufactured or refilled cartridges don't work.

Since refills tend to be about half what a new cartridge would cost, even if they failed 50% of the time you'd still break even. According to HP only 1 in 6 actually fail prematurely. That still makes them cheaper.

Laser printers are a whole different ballpark when looking to purchase. Few things you'll probably want to ask:
1) How much am I willing to spend?
2) How fast do I NEED it to go?
3) Do I want it to automatically print on both sides of the paper (duplexer)?
4) Do I want to hook it up via a USB cable, or via a network cable into my router?
5) Do I need to print in color? Or can I use strictly a B&W laser and color inkjet?

fregac was selling some nice laser printers about a month ago in classifieds. Might want to ask if he still has them.
