So I've got a few friends who work for the City of Raleigh. The work in the court system but pointed out to me that the majority of young, single police officers have Myspace profiles. I couldn't help but find this unprofessional. Especially since when we started looking at them, all of them having pictures of them getting drunk, hanging out with 15year old looking girls, etc. I know its a day and age of online social networking, etc.

But when is it too much?

This seems like more of a soapbox thing.

But, my answer is, that if they somehow represent their agency in their profile (like wearing their uniform or something), then it crosses the line. If it doesn't represent their agency in any way, then it's their private life and they can do what they want.

That I agree with...

but you know that little part "Occupation"

It should NOT say: I'm A POLICE OFFICER FOR THE RALEIGH POLICE DEPARTMENT... i'm sorry, you can have a private life, but on the same token you have to represent everything that badge stands for...

I had major issues with a RPD officer being incompetent, but his sergeant straightened everything out

I try to keep my work and personal lives seperate but have pondered this as well. Anyone could pull my full name off of my business card and find me on myspace. My myspace profile does not really compliment me professionally. I have always figured that at some point it will have to be edited or taken down. This is not the time though, and I don't want my career to dominate what I do away from work any more than it already does.

As far as the police go, they are human beings too and should have the right to post pictures having fun outside of work. If they post any illegal activity they run the same risk of punishment as the rest of us.

just dont publically post anything you wouldnt mind your boss/parents seeing. its as simple as that.

is really that important to you to have a picture of you trashed and passed out on the floor for all to see?

You also have to consider comments posted by your friends, their profiles that are linked directly, pictures they might insert, etc. Beleive it or not, there arent many pictures of me passed out in circulation.

i can understand that. i guess if thats the case, you could always make your profile private, so only people you know can find those other pics.
