word. i've got an appointment for the beginning of the week, but i'm pretty sure i just noticed a
little drop of blood. she did just go out though, so maybe it was just a dark drop of pee.

^her first one was about 2 weeks, which is way too long considering my roomate that recently moved in has a male with full equipment...

Yes, it can be done but will definitely cost more. Its a lot more work for the vet because they have to ligate all of the blood vessels in the memberance surrounding the uterus (normally very little, if any, ligating of these has to be done) so its more time, suture, gauze and, anesthesia that you have to pay for. Also, it adds risk to your pet by having the spay while in heat because of the extra length of time under anesthesia and potential for post-surgery bleeding in the abdomen and such. Call and reschedule the surgery with your pet. They should completely understand and likely will prefer it.

^^basically what i was told today, but according to them they didn't have anyone working today that was "fully" qualified to make a decision. they indicated that since she's in the very early stages of the cycle, it may still be ok. i'm supposed to call back again mon. morning. i certainly don't want to put her through any additional risk, but i also don't like the risk of having the two of them in the house together, even though they are seperated (not to mention the annoyance once the male picks up on what's going on).
^it's a purebred lab that he's still considering breeding. he owns this dogs mother also, and used to own her mother before that, so continuing the lineage with a litter is a little more personal to him than just having some puppies for the hell of it. my dog is just a rescue from a shelter, i have no interest in breeding her.

Oh, and its not like the risj is exceptionally severe or anything... they perform spays al the time when dogs are in heat... just gonna cost you a tad more.

^^ah... well, i'm not concerned about any additional cost. i would much rather pay a little extra than risk contributing to the problem of unwanted pets. the whole reason i adopted her in the first place vs. buying a dog was to my small part to help with that. hell, i've already spend thousands in vet bills on the damn thing anyway i guess i'll talk it over with the vet monday and make my decision.

That I definitely understand.

Our house was nearly overtaken by cats when I was a kid and we were too poor to afford spaying/neutering our cats.

BTW, this was before SPCA vouchers and such.

FYI, when a dog is not spayed before she has her first heat that chance of mammary cancer increases to 60%. Of course mammary cancer in dogs is usually treatable but its still a factor.

^yeah, i had all intentions of spaying her shortly after i got her before her first heat, but she was hit by a car (a whole other story) and had to have major surgery on her back leg. her first heat occured shortly after recovery. the vet reccomended i wait until just before her second heat to have her spayed to give her as much time as possible after that traumatic experience before having another surgery. she obviously started her second one a little earlier than expected...

ok, she goes tomorrow morning. they indicated that since it's within the first few days, they don't have any reservations. they did say if it was later into it they would reccomend waiting just for the extra cost factor, but that from a medical standpoint any risks only increase slightly.
