Have an autocad drawing file of new orleans' lower 9th ward that im trying to import into photoshop and be able to keep the layers that i created in autocad.

I save down the autocad file, open it in illustrator then try to export it as a photoshop image and it gives me the error message Photoshop File Cannot Be Saved. I have turned off layers thinking I can merge them back together in a photoshop file after i get them all exported but the same error message pops up.

summary: i have an autocad file that i need in photoshop. the layers from autocad must come through to the photoshop file. illustrator will not export said file. banging head into drafting table.

Any ideas/suggestions are welcome

thanks in advance

what do you need to do in photoshop that you can't do in illustrator?

also, if you take it into photoshop you can't take it back into CAD, whereas you could if needed to take the illustrator file back to CAD

the reason i need it in photoshop is more for the rest of our studio. The majority of students are more comfortable with photoshop than illusturator.

Taking it back into cad isnt any problem since the orginal cad file is finalized and will not be changing until we start the design work.

so i'm a bit confused on why you still need the layers to come into photoshop what use would they be, isn't most of the rendering going to be color fill / gradients? obviously the easy answer would be export to .eps but i'm not sure that's exactly what you want...

well were doing multiple layers of information on the maps. One layer is buildings there pre-katrina. one layer is post katrina, another is the road map, another is property lines, another is public transportation etc. Easier to make one map with layers that can be turned off than making 6-7 seperate maps.

But I keep getting errors that i dont have enough memory or it cant convert the file. Thats the real kicker. And when i can convert the file, it either cuts a ton off (pdf) or nothing shows up when i open it in photoshop.

if you can deal with greyscale try changing the color depth to greyscale and then export to photoshop... i think last time i had memory problems it was due to that.... worth a shot.
