"Source: Variety (via comingsoon.net): In a Variety article talking about MGM's move back into the tentpole business, the trade mentions a few highly-anticipated projects that are in the works:

Over the next few years, MGM is planning to release half a dozen films, some in the $150 million to $200 million-plus range. Studio is ready to unveil such high-profile projects as "Terminator 4"; one or two installments of "The Hobbit," which Sloan hopes will be directed by Peter Jackson; and a sequel to "The Thomas Crown Affair" with Pierce Brosnan.

It has already announced a "Pink Panther" sequel and the next 007 pic "Bond 22," due out in November 2008. "Rocky Balboa" unspools in February.

The pics are all franchises that MGM owns the rights to through its 4,000-title library. The goal is to release two or three tentpoles a year, all of which will be made with financial partners, including Wall Street money or other studios. "

finally!

^^ no.

there really was no REAL hobbit movie ever.

and this is based off of a book that came out before the book trilogy. its not like the other movies where they saw "hey this movie did well lets make a prequel, sequel. we dont have a story written its ok we'll make something and ppl will come look"

the story is already there

but it wouldnt be made if the trilogy bombed, so it is like a remake prequel to milk the already profitable movies (arguably somewhat like episode 1-3).

once again. episodes 1-3 werent written before the first movies did so well.

also they have wanted to and planned to make the hobbit since day 1 of working on the trilogy basically. but have had licensing issues since the rights to the hobbit as a movie were bought a LONG time ago. been in a somewhat sideshow legal battle for years. this isnt news that its getting made..just finally news that there might be some progress on the legal side

its different

so they just called Star Wars "episode 4" for the hell of it? he knew there was potential. i understand your distinction, but i dont think it is as different as you want it to be in my opinion.

in my opinion it is just a natural progression, whether they had it written already, wanted to do it, or whatever. if you want to make the hobbit, you assume it'll do well and then you'd proceed to LOTR. you could easily go the other way. newer movies that arent based on old works or have just a backstory in one's head are successful, then you decide to continue the story line. same net result.

[Edited on September 11, 2006 at 8:50 PM. Reason : not to mention if LOTR had busted they'd have probably said fuck it.]

If it is the same one that I am thinking of then I was quite stunned when the movie just ended abruptly without finishing the story. Craziness.

A Hobbit movie done in the same way as LotR would rock so freakin much. The battle of five armies would own.

I hear that George Lucas has obtained the rights to re-released The Fellowship of the Ring on DVD with new digital "enhancements" such as the much beloved Tom Bombadil. Sadly, this addition defaulted to looking identical to Jar-Jar Binks. (But he will re-re-release a version in the future that is exactly the same as the present one except with a new shiny cover)

heh. yea as much as i loved the trilogy growing up and think they did a great job overall on the movies..id be more excited for the hobbit and i think that hte hobbit could do really really well.

mainly because it is one story contained within itself. its simple yet fun. would appeal to a larger audience imo

the 'episode 4' wasnt added to the opening crawl until years later when empire came out. by that point lucas had realised the cash cow he had and decided to lay the groundwork for more potential movies. in fact, if you read interviews from the time, he was spouting his "trilogy of trilogies" nonsense

Seriously, you have to be weary of Jar-Jar Bombadil.

well see you learn something new everyday. i was looking around for why he'd have done that if he didnt want to leave that kind of opportunity open (figured he was thinking on a big scale). thanks for the info.

i grew up on the hobbit. i still have nightmares thinking about the part where the goblins come out during the night and ambush everyone in the cave.

i've always thought the hobbit is far better than the lord of the rings. not so much damn walking.

yea the hobbit is still my favorite book. i read it about once a year for fun. I know i get crap like 'that way my favorite book in like 5th grade' but there some things you just never outgrow like a good story.
