math therories show there is not a finite ammount of numbers because numbers always get higher but there is a finite number of numbers

the finite ammount of numbers goes all the way to the largest number that anyone has ever been imagined. any other number higher of that does not exist yet.

you can't imagine a high number without something above it because you just have to write a fucking 1 at the end and you have a larger number.

i'm pretty sure there is some rule about infinite numbers cause like if you had 3.05, you could just make it 3.051, and then make that 3.0511, and then like 3.05111

BUT LIKE

IF 1/3 = 0.3333333333333333333 REPEATING

AND LIKE

3 * 1/3 = 1

WHY DOES

3 * 0.3333333 REPEATING

NOT EQUAL 0.9999999999 REPEATING!!1?

WHOA MAN!

The fact that we can conceive of a larger number than the highest one someone has ever thought of proves the point that numbers are infinite because we can conceive of it. I think, therefore I am.

Well technically, if we could divide everything up into it's smallest part, and counted it all... a number higher than that would not mean anything because there wouldn't be enough stuff to use it.

^no because a tree is a physical thing. a number is a mental thing.

dood u r stupidz lollerz.

you can always add 1 to any number, no matter how big, and make it BIGGER, and you can repeat this process forever. so there is NO LIMIT, and the set is INFINITE.

[/thread]

duke, plz to move this to chit chatz.

I think the problem here is that this kid thinks that it is actually a matter of writing down or counting to the "largest number". He doesn't seem to understand that this is an abstract concept. He thinks that to figure out the "largest number", you actually have to physically either write it down or count to it, hence, the finiteness that he is sticking to.
