"Gunman wounds 20 at Montreal college

By PHIL COUVRETTE, Associated Press Writer
1 minute ago

MONTREAL - A gunman in a black trench coat and sporting a mohawk haircut opened fire Wednesday at a Montreal college and wounded at least 20 people — six critically — before he apparently was killed by police, witnesses and authorities said.

Scores of panicked students at Dawson College near downtown fled into the surrounding streets after the shooting broke out at the school of about 10,000. Some had clothes stained with blood.

Police spokesman Ean Lafreniere said there was just one gunman at the school and the search for any others was over.

Although police initially suggested the gunman had killed himself, Police Director Yvan DeLorme later said at a news conference that "based on current information, the suspect was killed by police."

CBC-TV showed police with guns drawn standing behind a police cruiser as a SWAT team swarmed the 12-acre campus. A bloody body covered in a yellow sheet lay next to a police cruiser near an entrance to a school building.

Montreal General Hospital said 11 people were admitted, including six who were in critical condition. The other nine were taken to two other hospitals.

Witnesses said a man wearing a black trench coat entered the school cafeteria and opened fire wordlessly.

Derick Osei, 19, said he was walking down the stairs to the second-floor cafeteria when he saw a man with a gun.

"He ... just started shooting up the place. I ran up to the third floor and I looked down and he was still shooting," Osei said. "He was hiding behind the vending machines and he came out with a gun and started pointing and pointed at me. So I ran up the stairs. I saw a girl get shot in the leg."

Osei said people in the cafeteria were all lying on the floor.

"I saw the gunman who was dressed in black and at that time he was shooting at people," student Michel Boyer told CTV. "I immediately hit the floor. It was probably one of the most frightening moments of my life."

"He was shooting randomly, I didn't know what he was shooting at, but everyone was screaming get out of the building," Boyer said. "Everybody was in tears. Everybody was so worried for their own safety for their own lives."

Raamias Hernandez, 19, said he had just finished his class when he saw everybody starting to run.

He said the gunman was dressed in a black jacket and had a mohawk haircut. Hernandez said he started to take pictures on a camera cell phone with his friend and the suspect saw them and started shooting.

Student Devansh Smri Vastava said he saw a man in military fatigues with "a big rifle" storm the cafeteria.

"He just started shooting at people," Vastava said, adding that he heard about 20 shots fired. He also said teachers ran through the halls telling students to get out.

"We all ran upstairs. There were cops firing. It was so crazy," Vastava said. "I was terrified. The guy was shooting at people randomly. He didn't care, he was just shooting at everybody. I just got out."

A SWAT team and canine units were dispatched to the school, going floor by floor to look for victims, Sgt. Giuseppe Boccardi told CNN.

People also were evacuated from two nearby shopping centers.

Canada's worst mass shooting also happened in Montreal. Gunman Marc Lepine killed 14 women at the Ecole Polytechnic on Dec. 6, 1989, before shooting himself.

The 25-year-old Lepine roamed the halls of the school firing a rifle, specifically targeting women whom he claimed in a suicide note had ruined his life. Nine other women and four men were wounded.

That shooting spurred efforts for tighter gun laws and greater awareness of societal violence — particularly domestic abuse. Canada's tighter gun law was achieved mainly as the results of efforts by survivors and relatives of the victims.

Another shooting in Montreal occurred in 1992, when a Concordia University professor killed four colleagues.

Dawson College was the first English-language institution in Quebec's network of university preparatory colleges when it was founded in 1969. It is the largest college of general and vocational education, known by its French acronym CEGEP, in the province

I was watching this earlier, and he only shot 4 people at that time, he must've just hitthe bonus stage afterwords.

And, canada should respond to this by, giving more people guns? yah right, that murder rate there is probably not as large as all the gun deaths in canada over the last 40 years.

GREAT thread title. Rather than starting a decent Lounge thread with a title similar to "Gunman wounds 20 at Montreal college", *hint* it was the same title the article used, you come up with this crap.

Anyways, I'd be curios to see developments as they occur. Post credible blogs/wikis on this as you find them.

^yeah, since that worked so well in stopping that guy from shooting 20 people. If someone around had been carrying, then probably only 2 or 3 people would have been shot, including the bad guy.

I agree with you man

I'd rather have a campus with 5000 responsible trained gun owners than a campus with 0 responsible gun owners and one looney with a gun killing people

I can imagine that thats beyond the realm of thought for some people though

but then again, I'm not "afraid" of guns by themselves, some people are

I honestly think everyone should at least be taught how to safely unload a firearm and basic gun safety... that would prevent alot of accidental shootings

^no shit. and along with the public carry laws they could have some kinda good saritan policy - ie loony dude starts shooting people in the school cafeteria, you stand up and shoot him in the face, emerge a hero instead of going to jail.

The solution to one or two people with a gun is obviously to put guns in everyone's hands.

I love how anti-gunners think that if we outlaw guns, the criminals will just suddenly dissappear......Australia and Great Britain outlawed guns and crime sky-rocketed. But that won't happen here right guys?

It's not like people don't do it already.

IMO, any campus which makes storage of guns illegal ought to at least provide some kind of secure storage area so that students (who are legally adults and often self-supported) don't have to give up their stuff.

in NC if u see some one who has the right to use deadly force to defend themself then u can step in and use deadly force on there behalf. if crazy dude pulls a gun on some random guy u can shoot to save him. also if u see a girl being raped u can legally use deadly force to stop the threat. there are also a bucnch of other cases where this would apply, these are just a few examples.

edit: if u were to have some type of requirement b4 letting students carry it would be a great idea. if they let ppl w/ ccp carry on campus no one would know so there would be no added "stress" to students. the only time u should ever see it is if it needs to be used, in which case the students are already scared shitless. u have to go thru back ground checks and a live fire exercise to make sure ur competent b4 u get ur permit.

the way i look at it is the government is saying that my life is more valuable off campus, because i have the right to protect it there. I feel there are too many restrictions on ppl who are qualified to carry concealed guns.

what is odd is that tonight at work we went through rapid deployment training which teaches a 4 man diamond formation to enter schools who have an active shooter. Channel 17 news was there and it was just on tv. I was shown a few times and had my 5 minutes of fame. I had my red nc state hat.hmmm now that I look back seeing someone with a nc state hat on his head and a gun in his hand doesn't look too spiffy

gotta love tww....all sorts of misinformation

you can forget about looser restrictions on carrying concealed. near as I can tell, the public at large ain't all that thrilled that cops carry firearms (necessary evil) .... there definitely will never be majority support to allow everyone to carry anywhere.

^ Yes, it's true. If Person A is in a situation that allows the use of lethal force in defense, bystander B can also use lethal force to defend Person A. Rape, death, or severe injury fall into the realm of lethal force.

Can you please give me some stats on that, compared to the USA's guns per capita? I've never heard that statement before. I know that Canada recently made handguns almost entirely illegal, and Sasketchewan sued to block the measure. Not sure how it turned out though.

Firearms ownership is much more restricted up there than it is here from what I've heard and read.

folks if we've learned ANYTHING from this sad situation, its to ALWAYS make sure you take life or death impacting advice from someone who doesn't know the difference between "there, they're and their", and who spells you with a u. you can't go wrong.

^that's the problem.

There is a correlation b/w gun ownership + intelligence quotient. I'll give you a hint: it's a negative correlation.

HEY!

This is TWW. Half the time, stuff people say in TL isn't serious. In CC, it's more like 90%. If you want to talk guns intelligently, go someplace like THR. College students are generally not the sort of people who can speak intelligently about any political issue.

Anyway, I don't know that there's actually any kind of "Good Samaritan" clause written into law anywhere as described above. That said, if something like that happens and you turn out to be in the right, good luck finding any jury that won't acquit you of criminal charges.

Given the rather high rate of gun ownership in the US (I want to say something like 25% of all households?), "gun owner -> stupid" is quite the generalization to try to back up.

i'm not implying gun owner --> stupid

i'm saying stupid --> much more likely to own a gun

and i'm not gonna bother trying to back it up, it's just a personal observation and in no way is meant to label every gun owner as stupid.

what I am getting at is this...

people that have spent alot of money and gone through the necessary hassles of gun ownership should be the least of your worries

and yeah, there are a lot of necks on campus and many own guns... but they'd be the last people that I would expect some illegal gun crimes from

and they'd probably be some of the first people to come to your aid if you needed it

I'm not really talking about illegal guns here, and I'm not saying that it's necessarily a bad thing to let people own guns legally + carry them around.

I'm just saying, for all the nice gentlemen that would come to my aid, there are also the ones that are too hot-headed for their own good and ready to jump the gun + fire it at the first chance they get.

That's what is scary to me.
