how do i put backspin on a ball??

i know how to hit a ball, so i dont need BS remarks.

i read that you need to pinch the bottom of the ball.. but i dont know how to pinch it.

put two balls down in a bunker, one directly in front of the other, touching.....skull the hell out of the back ball, it will hit the front ball and spin like crazy, when it hits the green you can get 30-40 ft of backspin....

take your full swing of course

it'll take some practice to be able to make a full swing with your hands cocked (as opposed to chopping at the ground). but with your hands cocked, it allows the grooves on your club face to do their job and cut against the dimples on your ball. that creates backspin

uh... backspin comes naturally (shape of the club)... if you TRY to add backspin, you wont hit it as far, you dont want that... only time to try to add MORE backspin would be a 70-80 yard shot with a sand wedge where you open up the club face and give it a full swing still, it wont go as far, and will have more backspin

one of my buddies' dad can do the best golf trick. It may be common, but I never seen or heard of anyone else doing it:

he can tee off from atop a full, sealed beer can....open the beer with the tee shot.....and down the beer before the ball stops. (the goal is to do it before the ball hits the ground, but it's still pretty damn cool)

Spin comes from a combo of

-swing speed
-downward angle
-ball type (old tour balata used to be the best, now probably pro v)
-club hit
-condition of grooves on said club
-lie (must be a clean, dry lie for max backspin)
-wind (spins much more into wind)
-softness of green onto which said ball is landed
-type of grass played from and onto.

you can intentionally put sidespin onto a ball with the way you come across the ball with your swing (sometimes). i have never done this unless i was dicking around, and sometimes it works. i never try to put backspin on a ball, i just judge how much i will get by which iron im hitting, because it happens naturally. shit ive gotten my 3 wood to back up before. i do hit a very high shot though

Try to hit down on the ball as much as possible.

It just takes a lot of practice and to be honest, usually only good golfers can do it.

i don't like to put a lot of backspin on the short irons, i try to keep the ball low and stop it where it lands, this is much better than backspin, even though it looks cool to suck it back. Watch tiger, he is the master of stopping it without too much spin. Of course he is the master of all golf.

2 things and 2 things only, hitting DOWN on the ball and playing with a ball that will spin (pro v1...the prov1x has less spin, callaway hx tour, bridgestone b333, or even the taylor made black tp ball that just came out). Cheaper balls will spin...but nothing close to these. Your top-flites and pinnacles of the world are usually for Joe-Chop who wants to hit it as far as possible and really doesn't mind losing the ball. Spin is really only something that your better players know how to use and better yet, know how to use effectively.

The ability to spin would have helped when I played Pinehurst No. 2 a few weekends ago. I played pretty decent but still just took a ton of shots around the greens. It was almost impossible to hold greens unless you hit the perfect spot.

I also own b/c I made an 8 on the Par 3 9th hole! My tee ball went slighly left and into the bunker lip for 1, 2 was back in the bunker, 3 was over the green into another bunker, 4 was back across into the original bunker b/c the green was sloped that way and it kept rolling, 5 onto the lip but finally on grass, 6 on, and 2 putt from 8 feet.

We started on No. 10 so it was my final hole and I made a Snowman!

Backspin sucks. The only thing its good for is front pin locations when you have to carry a hazard or something to get to it. The only real way to get it is to have crisp contact and a lot of loft on your club. I have a problem spinning the ball too much because I play with blade clubs and pro-v1's (when they're discounted ). I mean its cool to spin the ball, but it only serves a purpose when you are shooting at tight pins.


And if you're not shooting below 80, you really dont need to spin the ball cause you probably arent good enough to fire at pins anyway. Trying to spin the ball will only fuck up your swing to be honest with you. Just use softer golf balls and try to make good contact.

Ive hit mp14's since 98 and the grooves are pretty much gone, but I still love them, and now they don't spin as much. By the way 1234, I played #2 last weekend (Labor Day weekend) and you do have to hit the right shots to hold the greens (which were not in great shape btw). I only hit 11 in regulation, which is very low for me - that course will kick you around a little bit, but I didn't make an 8 on the 9th

you two blade players...at what point would you say someone can take advantage of blades? I'm a 2.8 with cavity backs and was thinking about making the switch. Do you find that you can actually work the ball more easily?

I play with hogan apex plus blades....they are blade clubs but have a slight cavity thats no more than 2mm deep, and a muscle back at the bottom for a lower center of gravity. I've been playing with them since my sophmore year in high school...i'm a senior at state now. I'd say I was a 10 when i started playing with them but this is the difference for me....



I've never like the looks of big cavity back clubs. I dont like the offset, I dont like the thick top line, and i've never been able to hit them. for me, I actually play better with the blades. I'm probably scratch right now, but I dont get to play during the school year so it takes a month or so during the summer to get back to par.


The great thing about blade clubs is that you can feel exactly where you missed (and see it for that matter when your ball comes up 20 yards short). On the flipside of that, solid shots feel like you swung through butter. You get better control with your long irons as far as stopping them on the green, and your short irons come off a little lower which I like.


There is a difference in "workability" i guess you could say. With big cavity back clubs, they usually have a bunch of offset to prevent slices. Blades have minimal offset so you can sit the club open and hit a cut, or close it down to hit a hook. Its a combination of a thinner sole and less offset that allows you to do this.


If you're around a 2 handicap, its probably time for you to make the switch unless you like your set of clubs in particular....nothing wrong with that. The thing about using blades is that your shots have to be a lot better to be good than with cavity backed clubs. When you switch, you'll probably play a bunch of bad rounds to start out with, but you just have to practice to get those misses closer tothe center of the clubhead. It will help you in the long run but there are some kinks you will probably have to work out.

Ive played blades since I was 18 (the same set, actually). I love them, have bought other blades since, but always gone back. I don't really work the short irons much, hell, i don't want them to go anywhere but straight. I like them for their consistent distance control, and it makes me a better ball striker for sure to hit blades. Cavity backs to me have a tendency for the ball to jump off the face, which shoots it who knows where, plus they hit it higher, which i don't want. I am about a +1 or +2, last year was a bit better. I can play to it right now during the summertime, but winter it falls back a little. If I could putt, Id be alright!

see i play cavity back but i like the height and ultimate distance off it, i can get a good feel for the ball but I think thats just because of the quality of club using callaways

ALOT of it has to do with ur quality of club, im going to go in about a month and search for a new iron set as its about time, the Nike Irons have been interesting to me, along with the new Cobra stuff, Cobras really coming out with some good stuff lately

anyone tried the new rapture club by ping? i demoed it the other day, its got a WEIRD feel off the head but it sure does get an extra 5-10 yards, cant control it as well as my F speed though

played in a US Amateur qualifier and shot 77 with 2 birdies and 36 putts. Best ball striking round I've ever played in tournament golf with the exception of the last hole.

You see Webb Simpson play in the am semis this year. Kid can flat out stripe it - he plays at my home course in Pinehurst and he shot 58 at Carolina Country Club a few years ago. (yeah, easy track, but shit).

I remember one club champ qualifier around 8 years ago. Shot a 70 with 18 greens in reg, 2 par fives in two, 36 putts. Two putted every hole.

If you are having to worry about this, then you aren't good enough for it to even matter. If you were, then you wouldn't be asking. There is no real "secret" to putting backspin on the ball, except for hitting a good solid shot. If you are swining with the thought in your head to try and put backspin on it, you are gonna start messing up all sorts of things in your swing. Unless you are hitting worm burners ever time, then backspin is real overrated. Sure, it might be cool to hit a shot and have it spin back 10 feet, but more times than none, it ends up putting you further than the hole than you would have been if it had just landed and released a few feat.
