Quote :
"Organizers of the College of Design's Halloween Bash are challenging the University's alcohol policy after a Jan. 24 revision that may prevent the celebration from taking place.

While University administrators have implemented the changes to protect students from potential danger, according to the regulation, some design school students said they feel the regulations are disrupting an important tradition.

"It is a very important event because a big idea in the design school is the conglomeration of ideas and students coming together and creating as artists," Patrick Murphy, a sophomore in industrial design, said. "Also, it is a great showcase for student work and an important tradition."

The bash is a theme party planned and executed entirely by College of Design students. Organizers typically hold the event in the "pit" between Brooks and Kamphoefner Halls and it includes colossal decorations, costume contests and a band.

In the past, students have checked IDs at the door to the bash and have marked hands accordingly. On Halloween, of-age costumed students bring their own alcohol and the party begins.

As the bash has grown in popularity, more students have attended the work of the design students, but last year, problems arose because of over-capacity.

"There were people sneaking in, extra security had to be called in and some people who had purchased tickets had to be turned away," Diana Sakhoury, a senior in art and design and head of the Design Council, said. "I estimate that we had about 1,500 people in attendance, which is way too many for that space."

At a meeting of the Design Council on Wednesday afternoon, Sakhoury said despite the growth issues and the presence of alcohol, violence or misconduct have not been a problem. Students at the meeting agreed that the bash would not be the same if students did not have the freedom to drink.

"The studio crawl this past spring did not have the good vibes it has had in the previous years," Jessica Frucht, a junior in art and design, said. "The presence of alcohol changes the nature of the event. It becomes less of something you have to go to for school and more of something lots of people want to go to for fun."

According to the regulation, "no permission will be granted to serve, possess or consume alcohol at events held by students or student organizations or at University-sponsored events focused primarily on students or student groups." Sakhoury said at the meeting the changes were a result of the 2004 tailgate shootings. The regulation requires anyone who wishes to ask for an exception to this rule receive approval from the chancellor.

The Design Council discussed the option of moving the bash off campus in response to the new regulation. That would be a more costly and difficult option for the college and would change the nature of the event as well, organizers said.

"If the bash is off campus, it's a different event," Hannah Whitaker, a senior in art and design, said. "There is a connection between the art and the place here that we should honor. Anything less is pointless and signifies the slow death of the essence of this event."

Some students and faculty said they support an alcohol-free bash.

"I do sympathize with the chancellor," Marvin Malecha, dean of the College of Design, said. "We think of ourselves as a family in the design school, so what is good for one part of our community is what is good for the whole. You shouldn't make an allowance for a policy meant to protect the whole community. The students have every right to ask for a fair hearing, but they must be prepared to accept the outcome."

Ultimately, the Design Council has decided to ask for an exception from the chancellor and is putting together a petition for keeping the bash on campus and sticking with a "bring your own beer" policy.

Although this will mean arranging a new on-campus venue because the pit is under construction, organizers said they believe the traditions surrounding the bash are important and hope they can find support for their cause in the University community.

"I do not think exceptions will be made," Tom Stafford, vice chancellor for student affairs, said. "I cannot imagine a circumstance that would compel the chancellor or I to make an exception to the regulation."

However, according to the regulation "changes or exceptions to administrative regulations issued by the chancellor may only be made by the chancellor.""

Alright, TWW. Time to exercise your clout and get this overturned. No way we should let this school
slip further into the pits of puritanism and senselessness.

Okay, the no alcohol thing sucks, no matter what. BUT, isn't what's more important as of right now is WHERE the party's going to be at? Since that area is under construction (till like May I thought?), I think that's a bit more pressing.

The Art to Wear people are already trying to find a new place to have the fashion show this year because of the construction. You'd think that'd also be important to the Halloween Bash. I personally loved the fact that it was always on campus. I think if it does move away from campus, idk, it's just gonna be very different.

let's cancell the only on-campus halloween party that will draw people and instead make even more people drive off campus to get drunk, thus increasing the chance for drunk driving that night. all because we dont want alcohol on these sacred grounds.

it could be moved to talley, but i have a feeling that they'd block that pretty swiftly. this sucks

wait, so the policy that bans alchohol was made in 04 after the tailgate shootings?

but the party has allowed alchohol in the 2 years since then. I'll be pissed if it's banned this year, I'm finally old enough to drink

If they are worried about space being a problem, would it really be that difficult to throw it somewhere more open like the Court of the Carolinas or Pullen Park?

Have they already started renovating Kamphoefner auditorium?

I'm wondering because the architecture lectures aren't being held there this semester according to the schedule, and the article mentions the pit is under construction.

the same people in the administration making these rules were drinking keg beer at lawn party, getting drunk at the tailgate and streaking naked through campus after the 74 and 83 championships.

hypocrites.

their generation partied just as hard as ours.

why can't they just have an off-campus party like every other organization that wants to have an alcoholic party? why have they gotten special treatment for so long anyway?

my question is, why not? what is your problem with the administration allowing an alcoholic party on campus? do you really want someone else's tradition spoiled?

i think the next step for the administration is outright banning of alcohol for tailgating.

typically people go to the design school party and then hit up the other parties, which usually occur after the design party has happened.

at least thats the way its always been among the people i know.

it makes for a great night. why not keep it going?

When is it suppose to be? The weekend directly before Halloween? Friday or Saturday?

I can't remember details of past years when it was a "wet" event.

tentatively scheduled for sat. the 28th, but this depends on space and whether or not they think it can draw people. if its a dry event, unlike past years, thats doubtful.

Anyone who has witnessed a design school party knows it's one of the biggest throw downs around NCSU. It is right on campus, usually with a kickass band, and everyone drinks and has a good time.

The issue isn't with "nerds" not being able to drink...it is with the university feeling the need to regulate every single solitary thing. Yes, students who are 21 and older can go to the bar but what about the others who came just to enjoy the bash? Plus, the bar gets boring. And the bash helps raise money...for what, I'm not sure.

I mean, I would still go to the bash and have a blast like I always do, sober or drunk, but that's just me.

Plus, most all the ladies need alcohol to keep nice and toasty in those scrawny-ass drawers and bunny ears.

1. it sucks that the conservatives of the campus administration have once again dealt a heavy blow to alcohol consumption and fun at nc state.
2. i'm glad the hypocritical and prejudicial treatment for the design school's halloween bash is finally coming to an end.
3. "i can't have fun without alcohol" is a completely moronic argument against prohibition. i expected the clever design school kiddies to be a bit more creative with the bullshitting than that. c'mon now!

Sounds like you just marginalized your first argument. Maybe it would be best if this was a dry event. At least that way everyone could drive sober to all of the other parties.

^^^ Hey, what's this bullshit: "it sucks that the conservatives of the
campus administration have once again dealt a heavy blow to alcohol
consumption and fun at nc state"? Since when are conservatives running the
campus? That's a non sequitur, man. In addition, a TRUE conservative would
NEVER limit the rights of individuals in such a manner.

Regardless, I am in full support of the wet Halloween bash--and old-school
tailgating, for that matter. I'm telling you all, if you don't stand up
now--with everything it takes--no tradition will be safe at NC State. Some
of you that are pooh-poohing the incremental loss of these long-standing
traditions might feel differently when one of your cherished traditions is
gutted or ended.

"Fight the good fight every moment / Every minute every day / Fight the
good fight every moment / It's your only way" (Triumph). Yes! Fight for it
all now or lose it all soon. Remember, you are fighting for the future members of
the Wolfpack, too. Will you let them down? RALLY, GODDAMNIT!!!
