http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Johnson_(American_football_coach)

Quote :
"Johnson formerly served as head football coach at Georgia Southern University. During his time at Georgia Southern, the Eagles captured the NCAA Division I-AA national football championships in 1999 and 2000. He is also only one of 4 coaches to ever record 50 wins in their first 4 seasons as head coach at the Division I level.[1]

In 2002, Johnson departed Georgia Southern for Navy. Johnson's initial season saw the Midshipmen win only two of twelve contests. Subsequently, Johnson's teams have enjoyed a high degree of success. The 2003 team completed their season with an 8-5 mark and participated in the EV1.net Houston Bowl, their first bowl game since 1996, but losing to the Texas Tech Red Raiders 14-38. In 2004, Johnson's team participated in the Emerald Bowl, defeating New Mexico 34-19 and the school's fifth bowl win in history. Also that year, Navy won 10 games, tying the record for wins at Navy which had stood alone since 1905. The 2005 squad recorded a final mark of 8-4, which was highlighted by victories over Army, Air Force, and Colorado State in the inagural Poinsettia Bowl.

He is also dominating in the Commander in Chief's Trophy competition, going 7-1 (.875) in his 4 years. He is also the third coach in Navy's history to go 4-0 in his first 4 seasons against Army, joining Wayne Hardin and George Welsh."

I'd love to have him. While everyone else is looking to grab Butch Davis or Mike Price, we can nab this guy. I think he could be our George Welsh.

Got his degrees from Western and App, respectively.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Cowher

Quote :
"Cowher began his coaching career in 1985 at age 28 under Marty Schottenheimer with the Browns. He was the Browns' special teams coach in 1985-86 and secondary coach in 1987-88 before following Schottenheimer to the Kansas City Chiefs in 1989 as defensive coordinator.

He became the fifteenth head coach in Steelers history when he replaced Chuck Noll on January 21, 1992 – but only the second head coach since the NFL merger in 1970. Under Cowher, the Steelers showed an immediate improvement from the dissapointing 7-9 season the year before, going 11-5 and earning home field advantage in the AFC after the Steelers had missed the playoffs six times out of the previous seven years. In 1995, at age 38, he became the youngest coach to lead his team to a Super Bowl. Cowher is only the second coach in NFL history to lead his team to the playoffs in each of his first six seasons as head coach, joining Pro Football Hall of Fame member Paul Brown. In Cowher’s 14 seasons, the Steelers have captured eight division titles, earned ten postseason playoff berths, played in 21 playoff games, advanced to six AFC Championship games and made two Super Bowl appearances. He is one of only six coaches in NFL history to claim at least seven division titles. It has become an article of faith among NFL pundits that the Steelers do not have a bad team two years in a row – they have never lost 10 or more games in consecutive years since the 1970 NFL merger. At the conclusion of the 2005 season, the Pittsburgh Steelers have the best record of any team in the National Football League since Cowher was hired as head coach. As of the end of the 2005 season, Cowher has boasted a 106-1-1 record when his Steelers are up by 11 or more points at any moment in a game. On February 5th, 2006, Cowher's Pittsburgh Steelers won Super Bowl XL by defeating the Seattle Seahawks 21-10, giving Cowher his first Super Bowl ring."

Having been at Georgia Southern while Johnson was in his prime down there, I can say he is a fantastic coach. However, he is pretty set at Navy, and I don't see why he would even come to NCSU other than a shit ton of money, and that even seem to be enough to get anyone to come there either(basketball coach).

^there were other reasons...like a decent coach that made the tourney being thrown under the bus.

amato's firing would make sense, provided he keeps losing like this.

True, but they are walking into a terrible team, situation, and fans that expect too much. Almost as bad as the basketball thing.

I honestly think once the fans realize they aren't an elite college sports program, and won't be consistantly probably ever, they would be more confortable just supporting their team and not sitting around with expectations that are almost ridiculous to expect. Kind of like Vanderbilt. They know they will maybe have a few years of being good here and there, but they never expect to be a power in the SEC, and never will be. Thats pretty much where you guys stand.

he'd be walking into a situation with great facilities, bcs dollars, and a fanbase that will like him as long as he duplicates what he's done previously at navy and gsu.

everyone loved chuck when he was making bowls.

the criticism of amato was very small when he was coming in 4th and making bowls, it only became noticeable when he began to tank this year and part of last.

if we're a tough job, unc is one too. as is any job at any other bcs school.

Shane Montgomery....not now but maybe later.

He needs to prove himself first at Miami Ohio.

He holds the one passing record PR doesn't have...yards passing in one game. Had like 530 or something against Duke in 1989 I think when Duke won the ACC under Spurrier.

bttt

He's from Avery County.

He runs a disciplined program.

He's the anti-Amato.

As for the option, someone on PackPride claims that he once said that if he could recruit better backs, then he wouldn't be running the option. We have good backs.

so who could we get?

or do you think chuck will seriously be allowed to coach here again if we lose out?

Others mentioned so far are Mike Leach at TT (too streaky, but puts good teams out there and plays 3rd fiddle in Texas), Bobby Johnson at Vanderbilt (doing good at a tough school in a tough conference), and...Dicl Sheridan

Hey, I'd take Sheridan back today. He's still better than Amato, even after being gone so long.

^^you

this isnt like the basketball situation. we didnt go after any guys at lesser schools like we should have done. we should have looked at the MVC, the CAA, places like that. We let our pride get to us, went after big dogs at big schools, and got shot down, as expected. We, as an ACC school with great facilities and a fanbase loyal to the team and school, could easily land a solid coach from a lesser school, who would proceed to win given the newfound benefits of being at a bigger school.

and I don't know who we could get, I still think we should go after chow after hearing that he is unhappy at tennessee. and if that failed then go for some coaches from lower conferences like you said.
but for some reason i jsut don't see paul johnson coming here.

^^^ we didnt go after lesser coaches because we didnt want to get someone worse than herb. this is the ACC, and some "weber state" coach isnt going to cut the beef. the same goes for football. why go after a mid major coach who will just go 5-7 every year when we have a coach whos shown he can get the job done? call it a rebuilding year or whatever you have to, but face facts. Chuck isnt going anywhere

Coaches from lesser conferences that move up never do well.

Sinceraly,

Urban Meyer, Jim Grobe, George Welsh, Terry Hoeppner, and others I cannot remember

Especially not from Division 1-AA

Regards,

Jim Tressel

And especially not at NC State

Dick Sheridan

and then we're down in the basement for 10+ years like duke, where if we'd just keep what we have then we can build on it and get even better then we have been. one bad year does not merit throwing the Man to the curb

we also beat FSU and BC. and if it wasnt for evans int-throwing ass, we'd have been more competative in those close games we lost. we could easily be 5-6 or 6-5 now and you people would not be having this argument. when we're winning and going to bowls and the NCAA tournament everything is peachy but as soon as we lose a game its "FIRE HERB/CHUCK"

chuck is 4 or 5 games under .500 without the best QB in acc history.
