I have a 1999 4cyl non-turbo VW Jetta and could not find a battery for it yest. I went to Pep Boys, Advance Auto, and Walmart. Not only did they not have a battery in stock. They didn't even have 1 on file to work with my car. I think I'll check out Batteries Plus, but it they don't have it. Where do you suggest?

Off the subject. I dropped my car off at the dealership b/c my check engine light is on b/c of my cat. converter and there was a recall on this issue. My battery was about dead, but I figured if I changed the battery before getting them to do the recall then it would clear the codes and I'd have to wait another week or 2. They called and told me a battery with a low charge can cause the check engine light to come on and cause a cat. converter error, so they would have to replace that before doing the recall for $350. I said, no I can replace the battery myself, so they made me pay $100 to have my car back. THATS BULLSHIT!!!

that is some shit. sounds like something southern states VW would do

get on http://www.vwvortex.com and search for what battery type/group/size whatever you need. then go to autozone and get it and have themput it in. autozone probably couldnt find one because the stock battery is some obscure shit, but i'm sure there are more common replacements that can be used. you just gotta search and find it on the vortex.

battery specs should be in the bentley manual. i can check when i get home.

[Edited on September 18, 2006 at 1:44 PM. Reason : they may be on the battery itself. ]

autozone's website has one listed:
** 525 cold cranking amps (650 cranking amps) **

definitely not true.. i removed the battery in my mk4 a few times while doing other work on the car..

you may need the radio code, but that's about it.

I have pulled my radio a number of times and not needed the code.
I'de go demand my $100 back, because they can always scan the car and tell you why the CEL is on.

It ain't a BCI Group 41 or 42? Did they get all funny like Volvo and use a Group 47 battery with odd turd-minal sizes?

i've got a 99 gti with the same engine and just recently had the battery changed at Sears. they put in a Diehard, international series.... the only one they had that matched/fit.

Battery Council International...has standards for physical size, voltage, and terminal configurations of batteries.

Nearly everybody in the trade uses a variation of BCI's Group sizes.
