"BANGKOK, Thailand - Thailand's army commmander ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in a military coup Tuesday night while the prime minister was in New York, circling his offices with tanks, declaring martial law and revoking the constitution.

An announcement on national television signed by army Commander-in-Chief Gen. Sondhi Boonyaratkalin ordered all troops to report to their duty stations.

As soldiers and armored vehicles moved through Bangkok, an announcement from the military earlier declared a provisional authority loyal to beloved King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The announcement declared that a "Council of Administrative Reform" had seized power in Bangkok and nearby provinces without any resistance. It recognized the king as head of state."

its funny how some coups come about. my advisor, dr. kalinga in african history, was teaching in lagos, nigeria during one of their coups in the '90s. he said that the streets of lagos were completely empty the day of the actual coup and he only found out about it from a student, who also happened to be military and had taken part in overthrowing the former regime.

from the story on cnn:

"The People" didn't do shit; The King and military Generals did something.

But perhaps that is what you meant.

The current PM isn't wanted even by the people. That's why the people are like "psh okay". Noone is rioting because noone cares. The Prime Minister caused so many political issues that I'm surprised he wasn't killed. He wouldn't recognize the monarch, or the military power... and in this kind of government the branches are KING, MILITARY and PM. That's about it.

So the King and the Military got together and kicked his ass out. The people agreed.

^^^ No, no, no, no, no. Don't make Bush into some sort of martyr by assassination or coup. Just let him finish off his two years, leave office with a horrible legacy, and elect someone new in his place.

Besides, a coup in a country of this size is only asking for trouble. If we can't subdue a dinky country with about a tenth of the population and much smaller landmass, how the heck can you expect our military to subdue a country magnitudes larger?

he means do you think it's coincidence that he was overthrown on a visit to America, or do you think it was just an opportunity since he was out of the country.

i'm inclined to believe the latter, but i don't know all that much about this one.

The Coup was bloodless because the King went along with it.

America does not have a King to lend his legitimacy.

I'm too stressed at work; need to stop posting from my cubicle.

Technically, he wasn't visiting America but the United Nations, so I believe the latter.

"ARMY CHIEF MEETS PRESS
'Two weeks then we'll go'

General Sonthi outlines agenda for coming year, culminating in 2007 poll General Sonthi Boonyaratglin, who was yesterday appointed under royal command as head of the Administrative Reform Council, met media representatives yesterday afternoon at the Army Command. The following are excerpts:

How long will you serve as interim prime minister?

Two weeks. We will spend the period drafting an interim charter.

Who will draft the charter?

We are compiling a list of experts. The committee chairman will be selected first from the list.

Who will be next prime minister?

We are the in the process of selecting. Potential candidates are politically neutral and love democracy, with the King as head of state.

Who was behind the coup?

We were forced by the situation to stage the coup. Nobody guided us to do it. We listened to the voice of the people.

One reason for the coup is that there were suspicions of corruption. Does the ARC have a policy of seizing Thaksin Shinawatra's assets?

The law will be applied in this matter. Those who violate laws will be punished. So far no committee has been set-up to deal with asset seizure.

Is the case of the assassination plot against Thaksin a factor for the ARC to seize power?

There is no connection.

If Thaksin sets up an exile government overseas, what action the ARC will take?

That's a matter for the future.

How will the ARC deal with ousted Cabinet members who are overseas?

Some of them have requested to return to Thailand. The ARC insists there is no problem. There are no obstacles preventing them from returning to the country.

Can the ARC give assurance that the power seizure is temporary?

The ARC will work for two weeks and will step out.

For how long will the ARC allow an interim government to be in office?

The period should be as short as possible and should not last longer than one year.

Why did you accept the Administrative Reform Council leadership?

Most of the forces used are from the Army and I'm the Army chief.

Will independent organisations set up under the dissolved Constitution have to cease to exist?

They will have to go with the Constitution. This includes the Election Commission [which was recently installed].

When did you decide to stage the coup?

Two days ago.

Has ousted Deputy Premier Chidchai Vanasatidya been arrested?

We didn't arrest him. We invited him to meet us.

Did he accept your invitation voluntarily?

I am confident he did.

Will the ARC take care of the annual military reshuffle?

We haven't discussed about that. But I think certain points need to be reviewed.

When will the next general election be held?

Drafting of a permanent constitution will take no longer than a year.

Will the new Suvarnabhumi Airport be opened as planned?

Everything will continue as scheduled.
