Quote :
"Sports are almost as much about anticipation as they are results. Losing is less painful if fans believe tomorrow will be better than today, next week will be better than this week and next season will be better than this one.

No college football fan is entitled to an annual record of 10-2 and a major bowl. Every fan is entitled to believe.

N.C. State fans believe. They believe there will come a time when coach Chuck Amato stops making disparaging statements about the team that just ran theirs into the ground.

Amato's ways no longer work, and N.C. State should fire him when the season ends.

Amato showed up in Raleigh full of flash and fire. He wore sunglasses at night and shoes with colors nature can't replicate. His offense was thrilling, moving down the field like a 3-on-1 fast break.

So excited were alumni that they flung money at the school to buy national championship quality facilities.

Then Philip Rivers, the once-in-a-lifetime quarterback, went to the NFL. When he took off, the program landed.

Amato, who went 34-17 his first four seasons, has gone 13-13 since. He has burrowed into the lower end of the conference and shows no inclination to leave.

Last season was bad.

N.C. State went 3-5 in the ACC and qualified for the Charlotte Muffler Tire Whatever Bowl only because non-conference opponents were so weak I believe I saw a flag football team among them.

This season is worse. The non-ACC schedule includes not a single team from a conference that is part of the Bowl Championship Series. N.C. State is 1-2, beating Appalachian State at home, losing to Akron at home and losing by 20 on the road against Southern Mississippi.

Amato's performance after the Akron loss should embarrass every fan who believes in his school. He ripped the Zips because they admit non-qualifiers, students who have to sit out a season for academic reasons.

The ACC does not.

Akron sure did have all the advantages.

Amato recruits some of the best players in the Southeast. Akron recruits some of the best players in Cuyahoga Falls. N.C. State's Carter-Finley Stadium accommodates 57,082 fans. The Rubber Bowl, where Akron plays, accommodates 31,000. N.C. State is big-time. Akron won anyway.

Although Amato has been consistent over the years in his criticism of non-qualifiers, he provided his players with an excuse: You lost because the other guys got the breaks. What will the coach come up with when his team falls to somebody good?

N.C. State loses because it has the discipline of 5 p.m. traffic. Amato's players are last in the league in turnover margin. Against Southern Mississippi they committed 10 penalties and had a player thrown out of the game.

But it's still early.

The weather is superb, the leaves are still on the trees and hope is in the air. At N.C. State hope means that when 2007 comes around somebody other than Amato runs the program.

gotta agree with that one, that's a pretty well-written article, although if chuck is so shitty, why does this guy say wait till the end of the season to fire him? just fire him now and start anew

the media hates him for no reason other than he has an attitude with most of the media members.

They should love him because he always says something retarded that they can write about. Let him mouth off, write one article about it, then shut the fuck up so you can write the next one....dont run with it and get the guy fired. These people are stupid, and they dont know fuck about coaching college football.

Amato isnt the best coach, but i'm not so sure we can do better at this point. I felt the same way about herb.

Refresh my memory as to where Tom Sorensen went to school?? I wonder why he (or any other member of the print media for that matter) aren't writing the same things about 1-2 Bunting whose only win is a 3-point pillow-biter against 1-AA Furman....

I wish people would quit using this comparison. Everybody knows Bunting is a joke, there's really no point in writing articles like that when no one cares. If we weren't so gung-ho about our football program, then they wouldn't write the articles about us either.

Maybe if we start sucking a little more we can start to be televised on abc, cbs, or nbc as often as Duke and Carolina are.

Yeah, but my point was that it would be nice to see an NCSU game on a "non-cable" channel every once in a while - considering I don't have cable.

Would you just shut the fuck up with this media conspiracy bullshit? You like like a complete fucking moron everytime you say this.

Work in the media, talk to the people and then realize they DON'T CARE about State/UNC. There is no fucking conspiracy.

the thing that I don't agree with in that article is that it makes it seem like akron's players are shitty. The second-rate ohio players are still fucking good. Football is king up there. And the big difference is that they coach fundamentals at the high school level, where amato recruits athletes with speed but no discipline. That's why I wasn't surprised that akron won. They might not have the same athletes, but they know football.

I don't totally disagree with the article, but to say that fans hope we will do poorly the remainder of the season just so Amato will be fired is a truck load of B.S.

My hope is that somehow we get this thing turned around and we end up 7-5 or 8-4 (wishful thinking I know, but better than wanting to tank the rest of the season).

Oh come on, the media cannot get Amato fired. Consecutive years or poor performance on his part can.

Point on. Thats what i was trying to tell everyone following the Akron loss when they were all like "OMFG we lost to Akron..Akron people!!!". I guarantee you most of those idiots had never heard of Akron before we lost to them.

As good as they are, we should not be in a personnel situation where they'd be superior to us.

I'm not anywhere near saying that we should fire amato, but i'm just saying.

^^exactly. I was listening to the wknc "sports show" (if you can call it that) and all they could say was "we lost to AKRON." All those Ohio teams can ball. Same with the florida teams, deep south teams, ect. We just happen to be a basketball state that thinks it's entitled to win football games because of the ACC badge.

this was espn.com today:

Off the Mark
Chuck Amato is still the coach at North Carolina State, seemingly for the time being, but he can no longer be considered the self-proclaimed "Man." A week after losing to Arkon at home, and then inexplicably questioning the admissions standards of teams from the Mid-American Conference (hey, Coach, have you looked in the mirror?), Amato took his team to Southern Mississippi on Saturday.

The result? A 37-17 loss, in which the Wolfpack committed three turnovers and 10 penalties.

We knew the Wolfpack would struggle to score this season because the West Coast offense former NFL coordinator Marc Trestman installed never seemed to be the right fit. But now NC State is struggling on defense, too, without Mario Williams, Manny Lawson and Stephen Tulloch. Southern Miss freshman Damion Fletcher ran for 177 yards and three touchdowns, and the Wolfpack never forced the Golden Eagles to punt.

It might only get worse in Raleigh. NC State plays Boston College on Saturday, Florida State on Oct. 5 and undefeated Wake Forest on Oct. 14

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Maybe b/c you need a QB that is accurate to run the WC off. To run an efffective WC off., a QB needs a completion %age of 60 or better.......that, we ain't got.

i'm not saying there is a conspiracy, but if you've EVER read the Charlotte Observer during any major sports season you'd know the sports page is full of carolina homers, with tom sorensen not even the worst of them. if we beat app state by 3 its "nc state offense struggles and narrowly escapes defeat vs D-1AA team" whereas UNC wins by 3 vs furman and allows 500+ yards and the headline is "UNC pulls out gutsy victory in offensive shootout."

Its not a conspiracy, but read the CO sports section and you'll pick up the bias in a hurry.

OK just for shits and giggles,

you would rather State A: lose every remaining game just to get Amato fired,

or B: Us go 8-4 for the season and Amato stay around?

i'm not saying either will happen, but if you had to choose one of the two what would it be?

well Sorenson likes to stir the pot, without a doubt

in this case he does so by saying that the consensus among State fans is that Amato should go

Everybody is entitled to their opinions...I personally don't judge ANY coach's worth/value until the end of a season...plus I think mid-season coaching changes never work for a number of reasons, ie chemistry, new system, etc etc etc
