in the market for a new tv, I would like to spend as little as possible, but I realized that I can't get shit for $600 and I would rather get something decent...

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000F2P31E/ref=nosim/10108121979-20

Seems like a great deal to me...
any comments?

Here are the specs:
http://www.dlptvreview.com/dlptv/samsung-hls4666w.html

I know it does not do 1080i or 1080p, but when would we see these in application? Probably a while from now...

1080i is pretty common (as far as hdtv broadcasts go)

If that's last years model samsung, then it will look pretty terrible for non HD, and that model also had some problems with video delay and games.

I think you could get a Sony LCD projection TV that would look and work better than that overall, for about the same price.

read the specs, it only accepts 1080i from inputs, in which case i guess it would convert it to native 720p

thats why it is $1100, i was under the impression about $500 more would get me something to do 1080p.

Main reasoning is, 1080p uses a different codec, much higher bandwidth and processing. It will be several years before cable company jumps on that...

i was under the impression 1080i was not impressive at all because it was interlaced...

i was talking about 1080i, just cuz thats what a lot/most of the broadcasts are in (to my knowledge).

i use 1080i for my xbox 360 cuz my tv is older and doesnt support 720p. trust me, you can tell it looks a fuckton better. dont let people hate on 1080i. im sure 1080p will be better, but it still looks nice.

i dont think we need to have this turn into another 720p vs. 1080i debate. they both are the same in my eyes. abc, espn are 720p; nbc and cbs are 1080i. if 1080i was bad, then they wouldnt broadcast that way. it frankly does not matter but most higher end hdtvs display both and your hdtv cable box will display the channels in their native resolutions.

btw, i prefer panasonic.

well that was my general point. not that 1080i is better than 720p, but that it looked VERY nice in comparison to normal tv and didnt look bad cuz it was interlaced.

I picked up this one last night:

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-KDL40S2000-Bravia-Panel-HDTV/dp/B000EP1IKW/ref=sr_11_1/002-5272014-7744028?ie=UTF8

40" Sony Bravia LCD - it's f**king sweet! especially compared to the 27" Magnavox that I used to have.

I just ordered this Samsung DLP from Amazon. Should arrive next week.

This is not last years model (HL-R4667W). This is a new model (HL-S4666W) with "game mode" which is supposed to decrease or eliminate the lag. I agree that this TV is optimized for HD sources, but as long as you are using a digital signal of some kind the non HD stuff looks good enough to warrant the $1200.

DLP has a great picture and I almost bought one of those instead of ^^ but I didn't want to have to worry about replacing the bulb in the DLP after 3-4 years. Bulbs last around 6,000 hours and the avg. household watches 5 hours of TV a day gives about 4.5 years of use. Replacing the bulb will cost around $200 including parts and labor. One bulb justifies the cost of an LCD.

^ that's right, but each time you replace the bulb the TV is restored to it's original state. The LCD picture will degrade over time and all you can do is replace the entire TV

If you are looking for a great tv tha tlooks great on BOTH Standard cable and HD, look at this one..

http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-TH-42PD60U-42-Plasma-EDTV/dp/B000F6WK5M/sr=1-10/qid=1159368568/ref=sr_1_10/104-8348970-5739131?ie=UTF8&s=audio-video

I bought this TV in March and have loved it ever since...Its EDTV, but when looking at it compared to other HD tv's in the store, it looked as good if not better.. It looked better than a higher priced LG HDTV sitting right next to it, although LG does have some nice HD sets...It's by far the best TV i've seen that looks good with standard cable (standard cable looks better w/o a cable box, but still looks good with a box for those who want HD)... Definately a great price and worth the money... check out circuit city reviews as well..

fuck u bitch ass ma fucka..go into a fuckin store, look at the fuckin tv next to some HD tv's and tell me if u can tell the difference....im not saying it looks better than most, im just saying some of the tv's priced 2- 400 dollars more looked no different...im tired ma fuckas up here talkin shit just bc they are behind a fuckin comp... and it is one the BEST tv's ive seen that looks good on standard cable which is a huge problem with buying big ass plasmas/lcs/dlps today...they look shitty on standard cable...for the money, its definately worth it...

Reviews...but go to the store to see for urself...ED is not the same as HD...we all know this....but looking side by side, u cant tell the difference with MOST HD sets...

"I have had mine since January 2006. No problems at all. We had planned to buy an HD Plasma, but when I saw this one I was blown away. This set is EDTV, not HDTV. In the store this set was on the same channel as the HD's were on. The Signal was in HD (must point that out) and this EDTV dominated the room. I could not see spending more money on a smaller TV with a less impressive picture. For the hose heads out there, 480p IS considered HD. Can you recieve 480p on a standard def tv? No, you cannot. 480p displays twice the detail as 480i (standard).
Pros: ***Cost verses HD of the same size
***Unbelieveable Picture. Looks equal to or better than most HD sets. Including Sony, JVC and Mitsubishi.
***Large, but not too imposing
***Very easy to use remote
Cons: ***Limited connections in the back
***Somewhat hard to find instock

I don't have any complaints about this product. I would buy another just like if I had the need to do so. Check this TV out before making a purchase. You might find yourself pleased, and saving a ton of cash.

Update**** In respones to the other review from a retired person..... I am an engineer. 480i only displays 240 lines of resolution at one time, and shifts the other 240 lines in the next cycle. 480p displays ALL 480 lines at the same time. That being said. 1080i displays only 540 lines at one time and shifts the other 540 in the next cycle. the diffference between the 2 displays is a mere 60 lines of resoultion at ONE TIME and about $1000 or more. 1080p and is another story, and will show a little difference between 480p and 1080p. A similar comparison would be between a 600mhz computer and an 800mhz computer. The increase in performance is very slight, and hardly noticeable. The best way to see this is to go to a store and view this set when going toe to toe with a true HD. Bury your ego, and you will note that the difference between the 2 formats is not worth the money."

"The picture quality of this EDTV is unbelievable. I purchased this after extensive research and in-store comparisons. When placed next to a true HDTV with identical content, this TV looked deeper, clearer, and more vivid. I have very discerning tastes and am not easily impressed, but I must tell you, this EDTV easily holds it's grounds with top tier HDTV's. DVD's were absolutely awesome. I picked this because it fit right into my budget and had the picture that I desired. I had a 42" ESA Pasma EDTV before this one and I gotta tell you, the difference is like comparing a yugo to a 2006 porsche. For an EDTV, this is the best available, hands down. I would swear it was true HD. I highly recommend this set. This Panasonic ED is better than most other companies top HD's."

hahaha you want to meet to defend EDTV to that level? you really are an idiot.

seriously, EDTV is not as good as HDTV. why do you think you're the only person to see an EDTV? before i bought either of my HD's, i looked at all the different models that were available in best buy and circuit city. EDTV is shit. it will always be shit.

the fact that you'll defend it to this level shows that you think they're great. more power to you. if you like yours, fucking wonderful. but as i already said, to 99% of the rest of the population looking at buying an HDTV, EDTV is SHIT.

get over it and get a life.

OMFG here comes the post count argument. put in 8 hours a day at work for over four years and see how you amuse yourself to pass the day, chump.

price wise, shipping will be fairly high if you order a TV

also check out some place like Sam's Club, Costco or BJ's

they tend to have better prices than Circuit City, Best Buy, etc

even though they dont throw in "digital meat cookers" or whatever from that commercial

480p televisions are not bad at all. Especially if you have a decent seating distance.

i think the entire fucking wolf web needs a lesson in seperating "picture quality" from "number of physical pixels".

so the fuck what if 64 instead of 16 pixels display motion block artifacts.

I went into Best Buy yesterday looking to buy a new TV..

I wanted a nice TV similar to all the ones posted in this thread. I looked at the EDTV that Di bought and I liked it, but you can easily tell a difference between it and the 42' Panasonic HDTV Plasma that I'm leaning towards. I'm also looking at the one that pmcassel posted in the initial post.

Anyone who actually knows about TVs can help me out here? I'm working with a space that is just over 40' in width and that Panasonic Plasma is right at 40'.

No real budget, just want a sweet TV. Any suggestions?
