Does anyone here ever visit the Farmer's Market? I've started going quite frequently over the past few months, but have never really heard much discussion about it.

Now I can't remember the name of the road it is on. The main road that goes by the Centennial park and ride (or what used to be the park and ride - I hear it's a permit lot now), go to the end of that road, it's on the corner. yea that seafood restaurant is a heart attack waiting to happen
but for the price, you can't get more fried stuff
a shrimp plate will cost you 6 bucks, and you'll get enough fried shrimp, french fries, hushpuppies and cole slaw to last you two or three meals!
and the country restaurant on the other side isn't half bad for breakfast stuff, and also pretty cheap

i went yesterday and got 8 golden delicious apples for $3.00 and two mums, a flat of pansies, daisies, and "pumpkin patch" flowers for $28.00

we're regulars at the Farmers Market Restaurant every weekend for brunch ( for a year now). Every server and the manager and owner know us by name. Its like 2 miles from my house so i get all my produce there. it gets way too crowded on the weekends so i shop during the week.

^^ I haven't heard much talk about it among any group of people...didn't specify college students. I know it's not the best around because I've been to others that were much better.
^ Yeah their cheese is awesome. Good eggs too. You have to venture to the upper building to find meats, cheese, canned goods, whatever isn't a fruit or vegetable.

If the one in Raleigh is not the best around, and I am assuming by around you mean other farmer's markets located in this geographic region, I would like to know of the better ones please.

The farmer's market restaurant was their first restaurant. They opened Kemps later. It doesn't take a gourmet chef to fry seafood, but that doesn't mean it isn't good food. I approve of it at least.
I shop there on occasion. You can get some really good food there, but I wish it were cheaper. It doesn't really seem to beat the grocery store prices usually.

There's already a good bit of apples out there. Last year about this time I made a batch of hard cider with some cider I bought there.

^^There are a few ways to make hard apple cider. All involve fermenting some amount of preservative free apple juice or cider. This may be done with either the organisms naturally present in the juice (so long as it is unpateurized) or with added yeast.
Most all involve adding some type of sugar, and some recipes include raisins, honey, spices, etc. It can be made either still (flat) or sparkling (carbonated). The one I made turned out to be more of an apple wine, since I let all of the sugars ferment completely, and it turned out pretty dry. To make a sweet, carbonated cider, you have to kill the yeast to stop fermentation.
An easy way would be to take the cap off a 1 gallon glass jug of juice/cider (maybe add brewing yeast), attach an airlock, and let it go for a couple months. Not sure how good it would taste. There are many recipes to be found on google.

Haven't been in a couple of weeks, but I love to walk or ride my bike there and enjoy the foods and such. The reason it's cheap is it's the "Farmer's" Market, few 3rd-parties between you and the food adding their cost to the price. The booths in the main open-air building there by the big parking lot are all farmers who grow most of their goods, just buying a few items at wholesale from other farmers to supplement their stands with other crops.
During the day is when all of the booths are open, but at night during the summer is the cheapest time to go because that's when all the wholesalers are there to sell to people running produce stands all over the state (and some in VA). If you ever get a chance to go to the market on a weeknight around 2-4 am, you'll see a much larger crowd of sellers and buyers than you would expect. I used to work at the market ~4 nights a week helping my uncle sell and unload watermelons and cantaloupe. I love the restaurant on the hill for its HUGE breakfasts and especially for the biscuits they have in take-out when we didn't have time to sit down and eat.

i was going to pick out pumpkins as well, but my mother informed me its too early, and they will rot. she told me to wait until mid oct esp if you are using them for carving.

the Raleigh Farmers Market is also known as the STATE farmers market, as in the State of NC... it is the largest farmers market w/ the largest selection in the whole State, and the one that all the other large farmers markets are modeled after. i worked there for 2 years part-time driving a forklift... i don't see how anyone could say its not as good as others around, b/c it has the biggest selection of any market in the state, and probly ranks pretty high elsewhere as well... and as for the one in carrboro, the stuff they actually do have there is way overpriced b/c everybody labels it as "organic" 9/30/2006 11:12:57 AM |
