..Who was the MVP of the BC game? Tyler played like a beast and had some big stops so he gets my vote.

tough choice but i'd say evans due to it being his first start and the amazing GW drive and crazy good pocket awareness and coolness

Tyler, his performance at key moments gave Evans many of those chances.

Tyler

Evans had a great last drive, and was pretty good for his first start, but he still didn't have a super game like Tank did.

evans

and on a somewhat-related note, the rekindling of interest and passion that he was able to re-establish in pack football as a result of that last drive (even though tank was the one helped give him the chance to make it) makes him mvp of that game in a big way in my book

not even a mention of andre brown.

13 for 97 (7.5) and a td. not to mention that 49 yarder. not great, but no one really had a great game.

the difference between evans and stone:
1. decision making - evans (so far)
2. accuracy - evans
3. pocket presence vs. just tucking and running - evans
4. arm strength - they both can air it out but evans wins by default because he's more accurate

here's what i'm most impressed with...really think he had poise in the pocket and hung in there and stepped up when he had to step up to throw and took a sack when it couldn't be avoided. also, look at the 2nd to last pass he threw to dunlap. it was in front of the safety but over the top of the linebacker/corner...he laid it right in there and i think that's the most impressive throw, not the heave and hope throw. he also threw the WR out and inside slant pretty well. people are questioning the batted balls but that's ok by me if some balls are batted because he's a little undersized.

^He is 6'3". Stone is 6'4".

I just think he made a few mistakes that were batted down by the D.

Yeah he looks like he's 16 years old

But he has a lot of heart and great pocket presence. He needs to work on his timing, but he is gonna be a very good QB for us down the road. At the very least, he'll push Burke and Beck in one heck of a QB battle next spring.

no1s mentioned the "option pitch" play to ant hill. The one where evans was about to be forced out of bounds and he just kind of pitched forward to hill for a gain. To have the presence of mind and the poise to see him and make that play was very impressive. Thats something that you might see from a multi-year starter but definately not from a guy making his first start. Over all i think he played a very good game. Some little kinks but a hell of an improvement from where we were. I also think tank had a great game i dont think he has gotten all the respect he deserves, hes kinda been over shadowed by mccargo (last year) and pressley. Anyway both had a hell of a game but i still think that pitch to hill was amazing.
also on a side note, anyone else notice we've scored exactly 17 points our last three games in a row?

^Yeah man that was a shovel pass like Brett Favre used to be good at.

My God some of our fans around me didn't know what the hell that was.

Some of the dumbasses kept bitching about the calls like when that punt hit our guy in the leg.

Our fans are fucking stupid.

Just a quick comment on Evans,

He didn't have an awesome game but at least he threw more than 10 passes in a game and he didn't give the game away by giving the other team multiple interceptions (that one interception almost cost us the game but he made up for it.)

Stone on the other hand never threw much and still had tons of int's going the other way.......

evans wasn't great by any means, but he was enough to play the rest of this season until we can get someone good (hopefully burke or beck) back there, assuming evans plays the rest of his games like this one.

in short, he doesn't give games away (stone).

You can't really hang that one completely on Evans, when your receiver quits running on the route, that's bound to happen.

Yeah that is very true and may be all we need to win some games if our D can step up.

You can't write Evans off just yet. He made his first start and beat the #20 team in the nation. Give him some time and I bet we will be impressed, assuming our o-line gives him a chance. Timing and getting used to the offense during game time will take a few games to get him going. Good thing we have a lot of practice until the FSU game. For some reason I think we have a chance.

thoughts?

it's a good thing Evans made that last drive or everybody would be bitching big time about him, he didnt have a good game by any definition until that last drive... he had a completion percentage well under 50%, barely had 100 yards, one interception, and no touchdowns! I think Dunlap defintaley deserves the MVP because he is the one who actually won the game, that last catch was ridiculous and Evans hadn't been very good all day... but I hope he can pick up where he left off!!!

The accuracy was there, the interception was Hill's fault for cutting off his route. It wasn't poor decision-making. Evans' main problem was timing...being late/early on delivery. This improved later in the game. I expect when he gets the timing resolved with his recievers on the quick hitches, etc. (and our O-Line needs to provide consistent protection), that will be resolved.

well just from what we have seen, evans has much more poise in the pocket and doesn't get all ancy like stone. hell, chuck even said that it reminded him of Rivers. That's a compliment of high regard.

nobody would have said that if the last pass hadn't been hauled in by Dunlap... I agree that for his first start he did well, but everybody would be pissed and talkin about how poorly he played if that last pass hadn't been caught, and with his stats without that last drive, nobody would have compared him to Rivers!

I think even if we would have lost he would still be starting against FSU...........
There were things, small things, that he did better than Stone. It may not be very evident but if you watch the game again you will see what I am talking about.

Like throwing the ball away and being smart in the pocket........

i agree, I don't argue with the fact that he has a lot of potential... but saying he is philip rivers when he completed less then half of his passes and didnt have any other impressive numbers except the last drive was going a little far until he proves himself!

Also remember the West Coast Offense is a timing offense, and this was his first game action. He put the ball on the money when he threw to a spot, the receivers just had to wait at times. This was partially because he wasn't completely in sync with his receivers, and partially because BC's D-Line disrupted his passing lanes.

wait, did you just give evans the nod on arm strength due to his accuracy, which you mention as a completely different category of comparison? Seriously, Stone's got the arm strength, hands down. I thought it was pretty well known that Evans lacks arm strength...where's rallydurham in this thread?

evans can get it there, arm strength includes putting some zip on the ball, he zipped it in there at times...it doesnt just mean who can throw the ball farther. the overall package of accuracy, zip, power goes to evans vs. stone

stone could have been good had he just been SMARTER and ACCURATE

i agree that it looks like Evans will be a better decision maker then Stone, but I don't see how everybody keeps calling him "accurate", he completed less then 50% of his passes INCLUDING the last drive, that is FAR from accurate! He boosted his percentage on that last drive by completing a few passes, and STILL finished the game 15-31 (48%)... you need at least 60% to be competitive on a regular basis!

1 game is a short time window to claim completion percentage as a foolproof indicator for poor accuracy. Evans had a significant number of throwaways (or long balls where either our receiver or nobody had a shot at it), which has nothing to do with accuracy and everything to do with decisionmaking.
