For the first time as a law enforcement officer, it was pretty cool. i feel good about it, although id rather not disclose the details of the event

hey, i am just telling you what you need to hear. many people become cops/emts becuase they have superman complexes. they feel great when they save one. then when they kill someone, or cant save someone, they go thru hell. if you havent been told this, then you really should have.

i am well aware of the realities of my job, thank you.

yes you do realize you cant save them all, and you learn to accept that. which is why when you can save one you feel good about it.

no, but i bet the first time you saved a life in an emergency situation you felt pretty good about yourself, and if i felt like expressing that good feeling by posting about it who are you to judge.

Its OK to feel good about it, and even make the thread, but if you're going to do it, you can't half ass it.

I hope that if ever something bad were to happen to me, that someone would be around to help me. That goes for anything from maybe a messed up car to something much more serious.

I was at the gas station yesterday putting some water in my radiator reservoir, and 4 men came up to see if there was anything they could do to help at different times. I'm glad there are still some kind people around. (The gas station owners had already offered water and a bucket to help as well.) I know that is trivial as compared to saving a life, but knowing that there are kind people around in any sense is always comforting.

Congrats on whatever it was!

the hell you can't. accepting that you cannot save them all usually results in a defeatist attitude, in which you're less apt to do "everything you possibly can," simply because, well, you can't save 'em all! its morally and ethically reprehensible to take this stance, regardless of the harsh reality of the statement.

I'd rather have someone helping me that thinks they can save them all, rather than someone who doesn't.

bullshit. thinking you can save them all is very devastating when you don't. those type of people end up quitting due to mental stress. we do everything we can anyway because we enjoy what we do.

Good work, Republican18, it's a great feeling, isn't it? I've been there too, working wreck scenes on I-40.

Yes, for those of you trying to harass him and make him feel bad, there are times when you lose one and you have to come to terms with it, but you find a way to accept it and move on, trying to find better ways to help others in the future. I saw my first DOA @ age 17 and it's never left me, but I've found a way to accept it and move on. Most of y'all are just bitching because you don't have a way of feeling the calm and contentment that comes with knowing you've saved another person's life. That's not his problem or my problem, but your problem, and you should ask yourself whether you have the balls to get off your ass and get involved in the community.

Another case of "if you don't do my line of work you have no balls".

Right up there with military folks
