The test is next Tuesday, it's not a take home, and it's open book/notes. The final's also open book/notes.

Yeah, but this is one class I can understand people skipping or daydreaming through. So it's not hard to understand people not catching things.

12.

He used to teach grad classes at Duke, and I think he forgets that he's teaching the principles of marketing class and not masters and doctoral candidates. He doesn't teach the basics and his tests are tough, even though they're open book. Don't get me wrong, he's brilliant and interesting - just very tough.

I talked to him after the 3d test asking what the hell is "the negative correlation of the relevant variations of two segments..." and I actually told him that even though I studied and I thought I was prepared, I guessed a half of the questions - his tests are not for undergraduates but rather for grads where he assumed that they already have some knowledge of the subject. His response was that he knows it and he purposely made it this way, so if all sections will do better than 70, he will be very surprised.
no extra credit
no HW where you can pick your grade up
no projects where you can control what is going on
no presentations
no fkin nothing.... just 3 tests for PHD level

If that is what you want - good luck... you are my hero.....

you have no idea... i would avoid his class if you can.... i mean, for his last test, he said "you will find the test both interesting and challenging" and then he told us today, "You haven't seen hard yet, wait until the final" I have been to every class, read every lecture, and am lucky to pull a decent C. Dont get me wrong, his insights are great, and I will never doubt his intelligence... but he seems to teach at a MBA level rather than at a Introductory/Survey course level. I am in a finance concentration--not a person with a desire to understand the ins and outs of marketing.

i wonder if i email him and am like...yo man...from what i read on tww, you are fucking tough...can you please teach it easy this semester

sometimes i wonder what professors would say to shit like that...email is a lot different than wolfweb though

but seriously...i kinda wouldnt mind sending an email like "hey professor banks, a lot of my friends told me you were pretty hard in the past...is there anyway you could possibly make it a little easier or possibly explain things better?"

or i wonder if i like sent them an exact link and was like can u plz make it easier

idk

Yeah. This last test had 15 questions. The mean was 7.9.

All I hear is how much ego this guy has and that with open-note/open-book tests, people are still averaging 50s on tests. That is flat out stupid for him to make it like that. It must be his own little game. I've also heard a couple people have called him out in class for him saying stuff that is wrong and he has scolded them publicly about it in the class. Glad I took Reuschle two years ago for that class!

i actually really like the class. he is teaching at a much higher level than an introductory class should be, but at least we're learning applicable skills, even if its just critical thinking about business cases. he has also said that on the whole, no one is getting lower than a C... unless you really suck- ie- missed a test, never ever come to class... oh and if you're taking this with him next semester, for the love of god DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. we never use it- seriously everything you need to know is in the notes and you can get from lecture...

^^^ and ^^ You're exactly right.

^ You must be out of your mind. I haven't learned anything, and I'm not the only one. I could learn a lot more if it were taught at an introductory level (or something close to it) and less like a graduate level.

I agree with bethhart. Its one of the hardest classes I've ever taken, but thats also what makes it so interesting. Granted, tests may be difficult, but the stuff we go over -critical thinking skills, ability to break down complex scenarios into something manageable, etc, are all things that aren't stressed enough in other classes.
I mean, when you get a job, your boss isn't going to hand you everything you need in order to solve a problem on a nicely formatted excel chart...you are going to have to analyze, make educated guesses, and use any other means possible to solve the problem. This class gives you some of the tools in order to do that when we attempt to solve case studies and then later formally analyze and discuss them in class.
Overall, its difficult, but I think the majority of people will be able to appreciate the class and Dr.Banks later down the road!

I bet if you ever decide to go to graduate school, they will not ask you to solve American Airline case or discuss chicken contacts case from 1971. They will look at your GPA….or by they way, GPA tells about your ability to “…analyze, make educated guesses, and use any other means possible to solve the problem;” besides, I am quite sure that a half of the students even don’t follow him when he cracks his cases – you need to have some good marketing background in order to be able to analyze them. BUS 360 is PRINCIPALS (basics) of marketing concepts and that is what he needs to focus on. If someone wants to apply this knowledge into practical life and to develop “critical thinking skills, ability to break down complex scenarios into something manageable, etc.,” he/she will pursue further and deeper into 400 level classes, but for now, just let us graduate.

Class avg. on the first test was 11.8 out of 15. He spent the majority of class today going over the test question by question. Does it get harder or did he get the message after last semester?
