I hate it when analysts say this, and I seem to hear it all the time. Any time they talk about LT, they say something to the tune of "Not only is LT the best running back, but he is the best player at any position!"

How can you even compare them? Is Peyton Manning a better football player than Steve Hutchinson? Is Julius Peppers a better football player than Adam Vinatieri? Is T.O. a better football player than Ray Lewis?

You can only compare a player to another player of the same position.

discuss.

you can't even do that, because players serve different functions to their position. It's like comparing Michael Vick to Peyton Manning, or a speed back to a power back. It's just dumb overall.

You can say the same about every sport. It's all subjective. Is a 23 game winner more valuable then a 45 HR, 125 RBI guy in baseball? You can't say. It's part of what makes sports so interesting to talk about.

you can say "You can only compare a player to another player of the same position"
but the simple test is if you were making a brand new NFL team and you pick players one at a time
who would you pick first
that would be the best player in the NFL, in you opinion

The problem is that there is nothing that an offensive lineman can do that proves he is better than LT, short of blocking the whole defense himself. Because someone plays a more visible postion, people will say that he is better.

Comparing players is fine, you can compare a lineman with another, or a RB with another, etc.

you can always compare players of different positions by how well they play their position in relation to other plays in the same position. Such as LT is the #1 running back in the NFL, and compare him to Brett Farve who is just a top 5 QB in the NFL.

It's because he is doing stuff no one has ever done in nfl history. LT is sick and is the best football player in the nfl.

Ray Lewis circa 1999-2003 was the most dominating player I had ever seen in football, he was EVERYWHERE on every damn play, either making the tackle or being the next player there just in case the guy broke the tackle. I could give a rats ass about Baltimore but love watching him.

As for right now I would say Manning or LT with a lot of other players really close in the second level

yup. he's the best player in the NFL because he is most effective and will impact the game in such a way that makes him the best. Teams have to prepare to defend LT... im sure they're arent as focused on Rivers (tho he's my hero)

but also depends on the draft order, team style etc....

I would rather have Steven Jackson and Walter Jones or Hutchinson than LT and some shithead Offensive Lineman

but I agree, most people would pick LT (or Manning)

NO Phillip Rivers is better than LT. However when The coach calls for a running play everytime they get near a endzone then of course he will get alot of scores.

LT is the best player in the NFL.

And he has earned the nickname. He is just as good a running back as Lawrence Taylor was a linebacker.

I will not call him LT until he does something truly special like break Joe Theismann's leg

Well that is a humorous retort. Seriously though, once he breaks Shaun Alexander's record in a few more games will he then earn the right to go by his initials?

I don't know exactly how you quantify the greatest, but you cant watch a Chargers game and not have your jaw drop a few times watching him run

thats about as dumb as saying "it's apples and oranges, you can't compare them." BULLSHIT. the purpose of a comparison is to see the differences between them.

This is a great point and that's why they make it. This is why the draft is so interesting...who knows the impact. As much as I like LT and how he's helping Rivers be the star he is, I think Manning has the most impact. I know when Manning and the offense walk on the field (except maybe against Dallas) the offense is going to move down the field and probably score...which is his purpose. A Manning completion seems to be a higher percentage than LT getting through a hole in the line, Hutchinson getting a pancake block, or Peppers rushing the QB (very close but not quite).

LT is the best player in the NFL because he is the better at his position than anybody else in the NFL at their position

we know manning is good but is he better than brady??

the WR race for best is always a debate

LB same way

LT is head and shoulders above the other running backs right now

this statement would be completely true if a guy named Larry Johnson wasnt in the league. Not saying that LJ is better than LT, but LT is definetly not head and shoulders above LJ

Peppers is the best defensive end in the NFL, maybe he is the best player in the NFL.

Gates is the best TE in the NFL, maybe he is the best player.

Hutchinson is the best left guard in the NFL, maybe he is the best player.

etc.

yes. i bet peppers could kick a couple of field goals, but i doubt vinatieri would ever be able to rush a qb effectively.

Peppers would be high, but LT would be ahead of him.

On the other hand...

I'd pick a QB first, so that system probably doesnt work anyway.
