this laptop is nearing its 4th birthday, and its a fucking beast...been dropped and banged and all fucked up

i've upgraded the ram once, with a 256mb chip along with the 128 that it already had...when i upgraded it, the dell site made it sound like 256 was the biggest pc2100 200-pin sodimm ddr ram that was made

well today i'm googling shit, and i see a 512 stick, so i go to new egg and i see this:

will this fit in my laptop?...if it does i'm gonna get 2 and have 1gb of ram in my laptop- up until this point i thought 512 was the maximum i could put

dont see why it shouldnt. it's standard 200pin sodimm at pc2100 which is what your laptop is spec'ed at.

well i'm glad...like 2 years ago i checked and the only thing i could find were 256mb chips, so the tops i could have is 512, but 1gb sounds soooooooo much better

According to Dell, Crucial, and a couple other sites that model has a maximum capacity of 512MB. If you want to try putting two 512mb sticks in, I'd get them from someplace that has a generous return policy.

well if it has 2 slots, and i find 2 chips that fit, how would they not work if they are pc2100 266mhz 200-pin chips?

basically you are saying that they could fit but wouldnt work?

Yeah, the motherboard may not accept ram over 512mb total. Every site says the max supported ram for that model is 512mb. It might still work, maybe even just needing a bios update, but I wouldn't count on it.

man thats freaking gay, why would they only allow the motherboard to support up to 512?

Because it's Dell. The motherboard might support over 512, but Dell won't support it. I'm guessing your laptop is out of warranty anyways so it won't matter too terribly much. Some additional Googling can probably provide such an answer, given the age of it, I'm guessing there are extensive unofficial specs out there somewhere.

i've checked google, i tried "unofficial specs inspiron", "inspiron 2650 unofficial specs", "putting more ram than is supported", "unofficial max ram inspiron 2650", and a few others

nothing came up...i cant even find a different bios to download so it can support more than 512

any tips?

Sorry man, you may be stuck. I have an old inspiron that can't support more than 512 sitting in my living room somewhere. Kind of sucks.

Said he has one that currently has 768 in it. Dude left his contact information in the post ... can always send an email for some more information.

2^19 = 512MB
2^20 = 1024MB

My guess is if it supports 768, it can also handle a gig in there.
