I'm on my way out. Anyone else going to be there? Success stories? 10/3/2006 9:34:15 AM |

I can't make it up there today; guess I'll have to settle for submitting my resume online. Good luck, though. 10/3/2006 9:36:17 AM |

Can you just go and look around? Do you have to be dressed up or is a polo shirt and shorts okay? I'm just a freshman and am just curious, but I'm not looking for a job/co-op. 10/3/2006 10:34:32 AM |

^ They encourage people to go and get a feel for companies/job opportunities out there. Keep in mind though, if you want to speak with a "name" company, you'll probably have to wait in a line of people.
Success stories ... most of the recruiters are the same each year. I've seen/know alumni from several companies. Go dammit :-).
(Btw, are they doing it twice a year now? Thought Minority Career Fair was big thing in Fall?)

anything related to a "professional job" . . . you never wear shorts. A polo shirt and pants would be ok I guess, but I would say at the minimum a button up shirt with pants, with it being better to have a tie. Some people go all out with a suit.

the minority career fair was yesterday, and the engineering career fair was today. There were a bunch of companies that were at both and a bunch will be interviewing tomorrow and thursday.

^i disagree. you don't have to be GQed out and have great looks to go along with it. but if two candidates are for the most part equal, you can bet that the one that presents themself well will get the job over the guy in shorts and a t-shirt who hasn't showered in a couple days.
i would go even further than that. personality matters a good deal at the office (and how you present yourself plays into that). i'd hire a 3.2, good personality, well presented candidate over a sloppy guy, lacking personality, but carrying a 3.6. 10/3/2006 6:12:34 PM |

employers dont go to career fairs for fun-- they're there to give people jobs
so i'm sure there are plenty of success stories. i got my job from a career fair on campus
even if you're not interested in finding a job and just want to check it out i'd highly recommend dressing business casual at the VERY minimum. just because you're not stopping at the booth doesn't mean the recruiters aren't going to judge the school based on the kids who show up 10/3/2006 6:29:37 PM |

the objective of the career fair is to get your name on the secret signup sheet with interview times on it. 10/3/2006 8:29:14 PM |

I got a personal email from an ExxonMobil representative asking me to come by their booth and speak with them about an internship after they looked at my resume in the AIChe resume book.
But I'm in Richmond on coop assignment... 10/4/2006 8:20:22 AM |

so i unfortunately wasn't able to make the engineering career fair
What is the best way to get an internship for this summer?
I have a GPA around 3.5 and experience working in a materials lab so I have a pretty competitive resume. 10/4/2006 12:07:12 PM |

I never got jack squat at these career fairs. Out of the two or three times that I went, I think I only ever got two companies to even call me for an interview later (neither of which led to a job). I got more interviews through e-pack and the career center than I did from this place. Obviously other people's experiences will differ, and it's also possible that I just didn't have an impressive resume (GPA of ~3.5 at the time, but very little lab work experience), but if you ask me going to the career fair to look for a job is just a big waste of your time.
