Is there a setting that I can change so that it doesn't disconnect from the network or anything when I shut the screen?

Are you looking to keep the machine operating, or just network-aware? If you need the machine running while the lid is closed (which I strongly do not recommend), do a Google search for a program called Sleepless.

nope, shutting the screen disables all wireless signal thus disconnecting you from the network, I haven't really explored it all that much but there might be a setting, not exactly sure though. gl with it though.

Shutting the lid is putting it to sleep. You override it using Sleepless or some-such app.
