So I drove to work today instead of the subway b/c I couldn't find a spot at my apt for my car (alternate side is a bitch).
Anyway, on the drive home (15 minute, 4 mile affair) I was pulled over by the NYPD. I was very VERY curious why they were pulling me over.
Cop told me that I have a non OEM muffler. This is true, I have a Greddy MX catback system. Its louder than stock, but by no means an annoyance. He goes on to tell me that non factory mufflers are illegal in NY. I told him that I know this exhaust is street legal. He then asked for my license and asked how long I've lived in NYC (I have NC plates and license). Now I could have lied to him and been untouchable but I said I've been here for just over a year. (actually 1 1/2 yrs almost) He then asked me when was the last time I had a ticket. I told him February 2003, which is true.
Anyways, he went back to his car, then pulled up alongside me and said he's not a ballbuster and wasn't giving me a ticket and let me go.
Now...I think this is BS. I've never heard of such a thing on the east coast, not to mention my car makes less noise than a car with a hole in its muffler. 10/6/2006 6:31:08 PM |

i don't know the law in NY, but it is completely possible aftermarket mufflers are illegal. alot of state/local bodys have laws further preventing modifications to factory systems above and beyond federal regulations. look at CA for example, they're the leader in that sort of thing.
i've been stopped a few times out of state in my ram for lift law violations, doesn't matter that you're registered out of state.
he could have also been an ass about still having nc tags/license when you've established residency in NYC, sounds like he was pretty cool about things actually.

if you have lived there for a year you should have a NY license, tag, and insurance......i think there is a 90 day rule on that 10/7/2006 9:21:39 AM |

^I know and yes there is But everyone tries to get around it b/c insurance up here is ridiculous, as you can imagine. No fucking way I'll insure my car up here. At the moment, there's nothing that police can do about it.
I also plan on parking my car at a relative's in NJ for the next few months, until i can drive it to my parents house in charlotte for xmas and then leave it there. 10/7/2006 11:06:07 AM |
