I'm thinking about picking that up. It's cheap and looks reasonable to use as a first bike. Any opinions/suggestions?

I figured it's a dealership bike so I'm paying about double what it's worth. 10/7/2006 3:42:18 PM |

Think it's worth going to a dealership for a first bike or would I be better off buying used from someone? I don't know much about bikes so I was thinking dealership might be a little better of an experience.
I was debating financing a bike and getting a newer one (06-07) but the more I think about financing a bike the more idiotic it seems. Especially for a first bike that is almost certainly going to be dropped at the very least. 10/7/2006 8:47:33 PM |

don't buy that grossly overpriced bike from a dealer
don't get anything new
i wouldn't finance anything
take that money and go buy an SV-650 (or maybe ZX-6E, etc) 10/7/2006 8:54:43 PM |

I would imagine the insurance rates on a financed bike would be insane since I would need full coverage more than likely.
Any recommendations on where to look for a decent bike in/around Raleigh? I'd like to look at some decent dealer's and maybe hit up craigslist for a few owner sales. I saw some dude selling a Buell on there for like $1800 that seemed like a decent deal although it is a god aweful looking bike. 10/7/2006 11:21:16 PM |

plan a : buy a naked sv650 for cheap. learn out to ride..wreck it once or twice.. then when you get bored of how it looks put some gsxr 600 fairings custom fitted from godfatherracing.com or something..

Wish the dealership close to me was open today. It's probably good that they aren't though because I really want a bike and I'd probably go ahead and drop the money for a new one. 10/8/2006 1:54:41 PM |

that would be a dumb idea
be patient, dude. you've made it 25 years without a bike...sit back and wait--get the right bike for the right price. i bet it takes me, on average, at least a couple months to make a car/motorcycle/jet ski purchase AFTER I make up my mind to do it and start to look seriously. 10/8/2006 2:34:28 PM |

I agree. Kinda stupid to drop all that luche luche on a bike you will drop soon after...
Start with something like this.
http://raleigh.craigslist.org/mcy/217634963.html
WAY cheaper than new, seems to be well maintained, and won't bring tears to your eyes if/when you drop it. Eh, fuck it, go buy a new one. We'll hook Squirt up with this one.

probably a little on the hot side for a first bike, but it's doable, and the price looks right. 10/8/2006 2:48:23 PM |

Yup, I agree, a little on the hot side for a newbie. But very doable with the right combination of fear, training, respect, and self control until experienced and comfortable with riding in general. 10/8/2006 3:21:40 PM |

i think that you especially should consider something totally outside of the race-replica type sportbike segment for your first bike, due to the seat height issue. sportbikes are TALL, because they need lots of cornering clearance. I'm 5'8"-5'9", and I can only put my toes down when on a sportbike.
it's not that you won't be able to handle that once you get comfortable riding motorcycles, but it's one more thing that I suspect will be problematic for you as a rank beginner (especially since you also aren't going to be as strong as a dude and/or someone substantially bigger). maneuvering around tight spaces, at slow speeds, or backing up might be a big pain in the ass until you get used to it. 10/8/2006 5:39:53 PM |

I don't know if the bike is still available but I'm going to call tomorrow and find out. Seems to be a decent price (I'm going to try to get it down lower) for what appears to be a decent bike. Seat height is something that I've been looking into. It's what made the Buell look appealing.
The only bike I would consider buying new at this point would be this one: http://www.suzukicycles.com/Products/GS500FK7/Default.aspx 10/8/2006 10:29:43 PM |

be wary about buying cheap used crotch rockets, those fairing can hide a lot of nigger rigging, or at least take someone like me or Igor that has done enough patching shit together to know what to look out for 10/8/2006 11:35:50 PM |
