So yea next week gonna be spending a long weekend in Arkansas. Any suggestions for places to go? We are gonna be about an hour North of Little Rock, so I'm guessing a day trip down there. But is there ANYTHING worth a damn to go visit/tour? 10/11/2006 8:32:57 AM |

I have family there. But I haven't been since I was old enough to drive/rent a damn car and just go somewhere interesting while I'm there. Hence why I want to see if there is anything interesting to go see. 10/11/2006 10:54:32 AM |

Driving on 1-40 through Eastern Arkansas is like driving through a waste land - there is not shit anywhere and there are no large towns to even stop at. Once you hit Little Rock, there are some larger towns after that. I have never been north of Little Rock, but overall the state of Arkansas sucks big balls. Maybe you can visit Houston Nutt. 10/11/2006 11:05:25 AM |

We are driving through Memphis on the way in and out.
I wonder what it'd be like to go to a Razorbacks game. Never been to an SEC home game before. They play Ole Miss on Sat., so it'll probably just be putting an asswhippin' on those Mississippi boys, but it might be fun to hit up a game somewhere different. I dunno. 10/11/2006 12:00:10 PM |

Gotta join the 2 minutes hate on Arkansas. When we paddled the Mississippi River last year, we made it a point to not touch the Arkansas bank. Bad juju over there.

I'm from Texas, so I know about that already, thanks.
I am leaning towards going to the Arkansas State Fair and see how that compares with the NC State Fair. 10/15/2006 10:38:25 AM |

You'd be suprised how many more fucking black people are in NC, particularly in northeastern NC. My town is 60%+ black. 10/15/2006 10:14:27 PM |

I have two on this one:
"I never would've made it through the Arkansas mud / If I hadn't been riding on the Tennessee Stud" (Johnny Cash).
"I'm gonna / Tell your mama, tell your pa / Gonna send you back to Arkansas" (Ray Charles).
Other than that, I got nothin'. Clinton Library, maybe? I'm not sure if the blue dress is on display or not. 10/16/2006 5:30:26 AM |

Arkansas Boy here. Welcome to The Natural State.
Don't let those others ruin your trip. Arkansas is a great state and is not unlike NC in almost all aspects. Of course, we don't have the beaches but we do have more lakes than you can shake a stick at - escpecilly in the NC and NW portion of the state. The Buffalo river is a treasure not to be missed.
To the folks who hated LR - get out a bit. Did you head down to the River Market area?
I do agree that East Arkansas is boring.
If you can, score tickets to the UA / Ole Mrs. game on Saturday. I grew up on Hog F'ball and was sorely disappointed when I was at NCSU way back in the day (way, way back in the day...). I am glad to read that things have gottne MUCH better.
Ozarks Suck??? Did you know that they are the oldest mountains in North America? Terrain / Foliage is very similar to Western NC. Get out and hike a few miles on the Ozark Highlands Trail.
An hour north of NLR? Let' see that would be the south of the Harrison area, right?

Well FYI I didn't do a whole lot, but I did go check out the LR Zoo with my kid. They had Boo at the Zoo this weekend which was pretty damn impressive. The zoo was no NC Zoo in size, but it was just about perfect for a 3 year old as it hit most of the big stuff without being so big I needed a Segway to get around.
I was also very surprised by the growth in Arkansas. Moms hometown (Searcy) has grown by leaps and bounds over the last 10 years since I was there and is doing a lot better than it is here. I was also surprised by how white it is there; I forgot about that. Granted LR is like 40% black, but outside of LR, there was hardly any black people. The ones I did meet though were very nice, as was everybody in general there. All in all, I must say that they do not really deserve the "hillbilly/redneck" label they get, as they were no better or worse really than anything here in NC. I had a good time and am looking forward to going back again. 10/24/2006 10:13:29 PM |

Heard the duck hunting was fucking amazing. Unfortunately I didn't bring my gun, nor did I have the time to go. This was mainly a family trip, just wanted to know if there was anything special I was missing out on that any locals might have known about. 10/24/2006 10:17:21 PM |
