So after making the Godfather 2 thread, http://www.brentroad.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=435892
and then reading the top 25 crime movies thread http://www.brentroad.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=435831
I broke bad and bought Goodfellas knowing nothing about it besides people consider it to be better than Godfather Parts I and II.
Well I thought the movie was great, staying up way past when I needed to go to bed so I wouldnt be tired at work this morning. I liked the way the story had narration and followed the story of Henry Hill from his beginning.
As bad ass as I thought De Niro was in the Godfather Part II, he was just as badass in this movie. As far as how it compares to Godfather I and II, if I had to make a pick, as close as they are, I would probably take Goodfellas. I also thought it was funny seeing almost the entire cast of the Sopranos in the movie, which is probably my favorite show on tv.
here is the old thread from TreeTwista10 and some quotes about Goodfellas... http://www.brentroad.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=360200

Good movie. But The Godfather I & II > Goodfellas. 10/12/2006 10:35:09 AM |

Yeah...great movie, but not as good as Godfather I and II. And even though they are both "mafia" movies...they really are completely different.
And Pacino in Godfather(I and II), pwns De Niro in Goodfellas. He's a different kind of evil. 10/12/2006 10:36:25 AM |

yeah they are very different, and not exactly easy to pick a favorite because of that
but as far as watching over and over, I would have to go with Goodfellas 10/12/2006 10:40:22 AM |

I probably agree with you on that....but being able to watch a movie over and over again does not it make it "better" in my opinion. The Godfather is longer and with less action. I loved The Aviator...but I'm not going to watch it over and over again.
Goodfellas has constant action and is easier to watch "over and over."10/12/2006 11:30:02 AM |

the only gripe I have about this movie is lorraine bracco. she’s an ok actress, but she has that horrible monotone voice.

I would call Goodfellas more of a "mob" movie, versus "mafia"
and I think there's a significant difference.
They're both about organized crime, but on two totally different levels 10/12/2006 12:37:57 PM |

A great soundtrack too.
The scene with the piano coda from "Layla." When I first saw this film and for a little while afterwards I could not determine what artist it was. I eventually forgot about it and didn't think about it again for years. A month or so ago I finally heard the full version of the song and associating it with that particular scene just made hearing it all the more powerful. Goosebumps I tell ye. 10/13/2006 1:58:44 AM |

Yeah thats the scene where Jimmy has had everyone killed, I watched the special features last night and they were talking about how when they were adapting the book to the script, Scorsese already knew what songs he wanted and where in the movie he wanted to use them. That song is truely powerful in that scene.
Im going to go out now and get "Raging Bull" and "Taxi Driver"
other Scorsese and De Niro hookups "Mean Streets" "The King of Comedy" "Casino"

I'd watch the movies first. "Raging Bull" and "Taxi Driver" are great, classic movies...but they aren't movies that I'd probably pop in just to watch it. I haven't watched Taxi Driver since I bought it two years ago. Raging Bull is a little slow too. Casino is awesome...but long as shit.10/13/2006 9:08:44 AM |

Goodfellas is definitely one of the greatest movies ever made.
Brilliant storytelling, use of music, acting, and that long, continuous shot through the Copacabana is absolutely amazing. I've seen it numerous times and I always catch something new whenever I watch it. The Godfather movies are very good, but they just don't flow like Goodfellas does.
This was, in my opinion, one of Scorcese's last great films. Casino is what I consider his last one. It's about 90% as good as Goodfellas is.
Everything Scorcese has done since just hasn't been as gripping. Gangs of New York and the Aviator were really good, but just don't stick with you like Goodfellas (or Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, etc.) does. Likewise with The Departed. It was really entertaining and I don't feel like I watched a bad movie, but it really wasn't great either. 10/16/2006 8:14:44 PM |
