I would have LOVED to have both, but truthfully this is MUCH bigger than Chris Wright. We are in dire need of a big time big man. We have guys that can run the point, and I have faith that Sidney will get his true PG. Hopefully Smith will get his academics in order and we will bring him in. This is Chris's lost opportunity to get to feed JJ and our guys on the wings as we run the floor. I am looking forward to what is in store the next couple years.

Sidney Lowe has landed his biggest recruiting coup so far, as the new NC State head coach beat out several national programs to secure a verbal commitment from top 25 prospect J.J. Hickson.
Sidney Lowe has landed his biggest recruiting coup so far, as the new NC State head coach beat out several national programs to secure a verbal commitment from top 25 prospect J.J. Hickson.
Hickson committed to the Wolfpack this afternoon at a press conference in the Wheeler High School Gym in Marietta, Georgia.
A consensus top 25 player, Hickson is rated the No. 3 center prospect in the country by Scout.com. The network has also tabbed him a five-star prospect and the No. 21 player overall in the class of 2007. National recruiting publications Hoop Scoop and Prepstars rate Hickson No. 14 and No. 20 respectively in the class of 2007.
J.J. Hickson Hickson made his mark this summer on the AAU circuit with the World Wide Renegades, playing alongside Michigan State commit Chris Allen, but Wheeler is where he has played his best. As a junior, Hickson averaged 20 points and 10 boards and he expects to do even better this upcoming season.
Hickson received offers from NC State, Tennessee, Arizona, Georgetown, Alabama, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, and Miami among others, but he narrowed his list to the Wolfpack and Volunteers after visiting both schools.
The addition of Hickson to the Wolfpack's 2007 class is especially important after point guard Chris Wright chose to verbal to Georgetown. Hickson joins in-state wing Johnny Thomas in NC State's class, and Sidney Lowe and company aren't done yet. Forwards Tracy Smith and Mike Scott continue to list the Wolfpack, and rising point guard prospect Christopher Warren has scheduled an official visit for next weekend.
At 6-foot-9 and 220 pounds, Hickson has the size and ability to impact the NC State program right away. He could start from day one and has the potential to be a two-and-out player. With a roster in desperate need of star talent, Hickson fits the mold.
"In the last 10 years [J.J. Hickson] and Cedric Simmons are the most talented post players the program has recruited," said Scout.com Recruiting Analyst Dave Telep. "I think this is a guy with a huge upside who can score it, defend and impact games early in his career."
Sidney Lowe and assistant Larry Harris worked very hard to land Hickson, and the commitment paid off. Hickson didn't even list NC State among his teams for the first month of Lowe's tenure, but the Wolfpack remained after the five-star prospect and have now picked up a gem.
"Hickson is a guy with a long term goal of playing professionally," Telep added. "He's the kind of recruit a first year coach can hang his hat on."
Pack Pride will have more on Hickson's announcement, including quotes, audio, and photos in the near future so stay tuned! " |

I love the fact that we had 0 points with Hickson before Sid came in.
He and Harris must have done some major ass kissing to land a guy like this. Look at that interest list of schools! I love it baby.

We NEED size. Losing both Ced and B-rack made us vulnerable down low. Hickson IMO was a way more important target than Wright because of pure NEED. 10/12/2006 5:14:54 PM |

We still have SOME size though, in McCauly and Costner, maybe not a ton of depth, but still some.
We DON'T have a real point guard, especially since Atsur will be gone next year.
Wright was more important than JJ 10/12/2006 5:18:09 PM |

Hickson is as important if not more important than a top-flight PG.
There are tons of guards out there, but very very few great big men. 10/12/2006 5:21:56 PM |

We do have guys that can run the point. Degand is at least as much of a PG as Atsur, Ferguson could potentially be used as spots, possibly Grant (provided he is back). Besides, we do have other PG targets. It is easier to find a servicable PG than a productive, athletic big man like Hickson. 10/12/2006 5:23:17 PM |

Maybe I should have quoted the whole post. Every time something good happens to the program, it's just assumed that we will win championships. Markgoal is actually a little more level headed than other folks, so I shouldn't have quoted him, but I just get tired of people thinking that single players are gonna be our saviors and we are going to do big things. Jay Davis was "the man" in high school, so was Stone, we were gonna do big things, blah blah blah.
It's just the nature of the comments. It's cool to be happy when news like this happens, but every time you read about the bball program, it's like its a given that Sid is going to be better than Herb, with zero anything to have this mindset.
Then, when it doesn't work out like we had planned for it to, we have to read all the bitching and whinning and all that bullshit (the boast boast boast complain complain complain thing), when in retrospect, if we would have set the bar low to start with (or maybe set the bar appropriately, given the situation) there wouldn't be all this lame "Fire X" "We SUCK" crap that gets old way too fast.10/12/2006 5:26:44 PM |

All big IFs.
This is a huge recruit. Maybe as big as Wright...but not bigger.
This is definitely some Wolfpack fan shit right here. We bitch and moan for years because Sendek never gets a top-flight point guad and that we'll never be a top team because we don't have a top point guard. Now we whiff on the best point guard since Corchiani, sign a big man, and say..."It's okay...we've got shooting guards, point forwards, and transfer guards that can play the point...we'll be fine....Hickson is soo much better!!!11!!!!"
We still need a top point guard. Thank god Hickson chose us...but it doesn't diminish losing Wright.10/12/2006 5:27:02 PM |

No reason to rail our guards until you see them play.
We have absolutely no idea what Degand can do--word was that he improved drastically during the time between committing and transferring (he was only 17 when he graduated). He's supposed to be incredibly fast. We also haven't had a chance to see Trevor play yet.
On top of that, we should be able to land Warren (3* PG in the '07 class). 10/12/2006 5:32:57 PM |

one things for sure
Lowe will utilize Hickson's assets to their fullest potential, unlike his predecessor, who would have him run around the perimeter for no ACC-worthy reason 10/12/2006 5:33:38 PM |
JT3bucky All American 23255 Posts user info edit post |
Trevor is a spot up shooter, he can run the point and has before but he prefers and is more comfortable being a shooting guard, much like JJ was last year. although he is much more talented when it comes to skill with the ball such as dribble drive penetration, dunking, rebounding and more...he has quite a shot, not sure if its JJesque but you would be surprised how far he can drain it from and how accurately.
he calls himself a sniper. 10/12/2006 5:37:09 PM |

he would have been forced to fumble-fuck around with the ball at the top of the key a-la Ced last year, and miss out on valuable rebound, second chance, post-up opportunities!10/12/2006 5:38:50 PM |

I think Mike O'Donnel was a 3* recruit.
And not to be a negative nancy about our point guard recruiting...because there are some behind the scenes things going on in that aspect. We still have a possibility of getting a pretty good point guard in this class. But Wright would have been HUGE.10/12/2006 6:13:36 PM |

So I drove back to Charlotte today for fall break. I played some NCAA Football on the PS2, then the parents came home and are cooking up some porkchops. I just logged on a few minutes ago, and once I saw that Hickson committed to us, I jumped for joy and started dancing around. My dad was like, "what the hell are you doing?" Then I promptly explained the reason for my elation. This is awesome, but I definitely think missing out on Wright will hurt if our current players don't pan out in terms of running the point, and anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool. I personally think that PG and C are the two most valued spots on the court. You need a good PG that doesn't turn the ball over (we all know what happens when you don't have a reliable ballhandler), and you need a good big man to protect the paint on the defensive side, can work it down low on the offensive side, and can just plain use their size for rebounding. Welcome J.J., I hope you have a great time here at State. 10/12/2006 6:19:26 PM |

with a big time presence at the 5, you need a serviceable PG (Duncan-Rutland, Jamison-Cota) and I would have liked to have gotten Wright like everyone else, but it's not going to set the program back, and we stand no chance of getting Hickson previously. 10/12/2006 6:22:47 PM |

Of course. Sure, we'd be better off if Wright had committed here.
But I think part of the reason it doesn't worry me as much is the coaching staff we have...I'm pretty confident that they know what to teach our PGs. But time will tell on that one.10/12/2006 6:28:12 PM |

ahah....we have the shortest coaching staff in the country with 2 national championship point guards on it.
If they cant teach Degand and Hopefully this new 3 star to play the point, then I quit 10/12/2006 6:40:15 PM |
