Yeah the control of information is so strict over there that a lot of citizens believe they live in the most advanced country. Hmm, control of information. Sounds familiar.

Wow, awesome pictures!

North Korea can afford:
- nuclear weapons
- giant and pointless monuments
- miles of electric fences

But they can't afford:
- running water for it's citizens
- electricity past 11pm
- New houses for the grannies
- Working traffic lights

... tears for my asian brothers n' sisters

I kept reading the thread. The only upside I can see to NK is at least it appears peaceful and clean. The amount of brainwashing and information manipulation probably boggles the mind to an outsider.

I have a feeling that opening you mouth and saying the wrong thing in public there will end up in your death if you aren't a foreigner.

Looks like a terribly unfortunate place.

Anyone gonna watch that National Geographic thing with Lisa Ling. They wear the Kim Il Son pins b/c he is like their 'god'...and kim jong il is like the son of 'god'. I saw a clip from her show and when foreign doctors performed cataract surgery on NK's they basically prayed to photo's of Il Song and Jong Il like they were gods.

Using god as a means of power is nothing new. Such is the reason we supposedly have division of church and state. The Chinese employed the mandate of heaven in a similar means.

The big monument looks like what you progress through as you face different opponents in Mortal Kombat.

Quote :
"during the day the elevator didn't work for 15 mins"

And this coming from a Russian guy? Please!
"In Mother Russia, fifteen minutes didn't work for elevator!"

Quote :
"also see the dead birds."

Maybe it's the language barrier, but I suppose that is Kim's fault too?

I am not pro North Korea, nor am I pro totalitarianism, but I do think that we should face things objectively and not be mesmerized that their have a centralized state with strict controls. This does not necessarily equate unhappiness.

instead of discussing nicomachean ethics, specifically that happiness is not a means but an end, and instead of discussing the basic rights that we think that every individual should have, let's just simply talk about the bare needs of a human being. food, water, clothing, shelter. a government that neglects the well-being of its citizens should be frowned upon. but what about a government that goes one step further by actually preventing its people from receiving these basic needs?

north korea is, for lack of a better word, a fucked up place.

there are people who like to downplay the severity of the situation just so they can continue on with their high standard of living without feeling guilty, while continuing to bitch about a missing bacon in their wendy's burger or bitching about how gas prices have gone up a nickel since last week. some may be sympathetic, but there isn't a whole lot they can do. can't quite ring up kim il jong with your cell phone and say, "yeah, hey. it's me. stop it." but at least you can be somewhat cognizant of the rest of the world, and be thankful for all the shit you have.

anyway, great pics. great video, wish more people could watch it.

those are the good pictures of north korea. it's a hundred times worse than what those pictures depict. the stark contrast of the two koreas is startling.

ok, despite being pissed and drunkend, i'm going to be nice. most of the general public doesn't know much about dprk anyway.

not sure if you read the captions by the photographer or watched the video, but very few are allowed to go into north korea. and if they do, they are escorted by a translator and a guide, and they are constantly supervised. the visitors eat lavished meals and tour the extravagent parts of north korea. dur, i wonder why the fuck that is. the majority of the population is destitute and many have absolutely no idea what's going on in the outside world. the government has brainwashed the upper class to believe that korea is still in a war against the u.s. and that they are winning. anyway like i said, it's fucked up. and it's a damn shame not many americans even know about it.

p.s. i cut my balls while trying to trim it. but i'd rather live the rest of my life in america with fucked up balls than live in north korea with healthy clean balls. i can fucking guarantee you, any north korean outside of the capital city would cut off his own dick to live in america.

ok, no more stupid comments pls. you guys are fucking killing me.

US and South Korean citizens are usually not allowed into north korea. north korean visa is stamped on a separate piece of paper so as not to prejudice getting a visa from some other country. They take it back once you leave the country but you are allowed to keep a photo copy as souvenier

communism could work if you had several base yaers of capitalism sucess and then switched. but most nations switch to communism while they are down so it never works. if usa switched to communism today it would work.

As long as you understand what you are saying. Communism does not work because it is incapable of progress. This truely sucks when you go communist in the 1940s, sure enough. But imagine if we took your advice and went communist in the 1970s: we'd be stuck in the 1970s. No internet, no computers, no cell phones, none of the stuff we enjoy today.

And for what would you comdemn your descendants to perpetual 1970s hell? Stability, sure enough, communism is nothing if not economically stable. And so a percentage of the population will be taken care of at the point of a gun.

the thing that really struck me was how beautiful the beaches were... right past the electrified barbed wire fences to keep people from swimming away... it really is a shame.

Looks like prices are there in easily convertable currency (google like 30 euro to dollar), but getting to Beijing is on your own dollar.

And also, I hope you're Canadian / British / something other than American, check this:

Quote :
"IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT We are very sorry to announce that the Mass Games for 2006 have had to be cancelled due to serious floods in DPRK. US citizens are only allowed to visit North Korea when there are mass games therefore it is not possible to travel to the country at this time.

Please email us for further details and when the next mass games will take place (scheduled for April and August - October 2007) "

That's crazy the people live under that. Take this, for example:

Quote :
"The State shall eliminate the way of life inherited from the outmoded society and establish a new socialist way of life in every sphere."

A hint of this would send Americans into pure revolt. Makes me entirely more grateful to live here, high mofo taxes and all.
