The East Village Opera Company combines the musicianship of a powerhouse five-piece band, a string quartet, and two phenomenal vocalists to reinterpret classic opera arias into high-adrenalin rock songs. Featuring monumental renditions of Puccini’s “Nessun dorma,” Bizet’s “Au fond du temple saint,” and Verdi’s “La donna è mobile,” the band’s reinvention of classical music’s greatest
arias is distinctly their own: a seamless fusion of rock, classical, jazz, pop, and blues. New York is buzzing about the band’s amazing live performances, bringing the towering emotion and timeless musicality of opera into the 21st century.

This concert is co-sponsored by the NC State Union Activities Board.

The East Village Opera Company:
“They produce something genuinely fresh that combines classical beauty with rock energy” – Boston Herald

“This music [Overture to Marriage of Figaro], played with precise and surging verve, may not have made such a theatrical splash since Mozart first unleashed it on 18th century Vienna” – Wall Street Journal

“See them now while you can still get close... the group’s charisma is inescapable and infectious”
– Time Out New York

“This New York band deftly fuses rock and opera... their love of (both) genres always shines through” – Entertainment Weekly

Universally hailed by classical and rock music critics and fans alike, the East Village Opera Company re-imagines the great opera repertoire in lush new musical settings. By combining a classic rock rhythm section with two charismatic vocalists and a string section, the group strikes a compelling balance between tradition and renewal.

Their unique blend of opera and rock succeeds where countless classical crossover attempts have not – by bringing maximum respect and profound understanding of both genres to their music. This is not a “Hooked on Classics” approach – arias are presented in their entirety in their original languages while the band embraces the emotional depths of the original versions with a highly charged and dramatic stage show. Imagine a collaboration between Mozart and The Who, or
Puccini and Queen, and you begin to get an idea of the group’s provocatively innovative treatments.

For opera neophytes and cognoscenti alike, this is a show that must be experienced live.

Bizet, Verdi and Puccini are badass already, so this seems entirely unnecessary.

But I guess it's a cool enough idea.

I'd rather see what Mike Patton could do with them.
