You know our government probably has a warehouse somewhere with weapons designed specifically for blowing satellites out of the sky. So does every other government that has the technological base to do so.
Quote : | "i thought that there was already a treaty preventing the militarization of space" |
I thought it was a ban on just putting weapons into space. Isn't space already somewhat militarized with the sheer number of military spy and communications satellites floating up there? If you're in a war with a space power, especially one heavily reliant upon it, you'd be a fool to ignore the possibilities.10/18/2006 1:03:12 PM |

just listened to apollo astronaut edgar mitchell give a talk and he was very vocally against the prospect of the militarization of space when someone asked about the bush administration stance on the issue.
he had even written a book about the subject during the reagan presidency. 10/18/2006 3:47:42 PM |

Dude, if there is a country out there that has the capability to shoot our satellites out of space, we're f***ed already, we just don't know it yet.
North Korea could not even detonate a 5-gram nuclear bomb underground right, you think they could hit one of our satellites? Heck, in a tightly controlled experiment, the Pentagon can't hit a three-stage missile, and that's less complex than hitting a satellite in space.

Seriously, machine guns in space is a great idea. 10/19/2006 8:35:13 AM |
RedGuard All American 5596 Posts user info edit post |
^^ Actually, it wouldn't be all that hard to do. Just fire a multi-stage rocket with a nuclear weapon on the tip straight up into the sky and blow away every satellite up there. If the explosion itself doesn't do any damage, then the EMP pulse is going to fry a whole chunk of real estate up there. Sure, it's a crude crap shot, but time it right, and I imagine that it would be suprisingly effective.
Why else do you think we hardened our satellites during the Cold War (and probably carelessly stopped hardening them after the Wall came down...). 10/19/2006 9:38:21 AM |

gps is one of those things we need to protect, and gps is in fact why the europeans are doing their own thing.. our military can "turn it off" in different spots around the world where only their units will work. the europeans are just afaid in the next war or us vs them they'll get lost. But the more dependant we become on these technologies the greater the risk of someone attacking our satelights. and w/ rocketships reaching the ability of the mega rich being able to have their own personal one (x-prize) its conciveable that someone like n.k. or china might try to start a fight w/ us and first knock our our guidance systems. so yes we need guns in space 10/19/2006 6:06:26 PM |

Up until fairly recently, the civilian version was intentionally degraded so that the signal was only accurate within a hundred feet or so. That was up until 2000 when Clinton declared it should be availible to the world or some such sillyness. 10/21/2006 7:48:06 PM |

bullshit. that would be a programming and synchronization nightmare to keep up with the location and strength of radio towers across the US and to then distribute that info dynamically to every receiver in your subscription base.

There is an interesting relationship between GPS, a relatively new technology, and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification). But I'll address that later.
What some of you may want check out is HAARP (High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program), which is based on the work of Nikola Tesla. And before some of you start in, this device is NOT conspiracy theorists' bullshit--it is real. What the array does and can do remain open questions. It is worthy of note that 9-11 is mentioned on the HAARP homepage.
