once you turn on the x-flag filter your spam should go way down...mine and everyone else i have spoke to has had that success.

you could always read your email thru another program like outlook or tunderbird and filter the spam there yourself (thats what most people do)

i forward from ncsu to my gmail account, i never see the spam. i also set up gmail to respond back using my ncsu address, makes things easily transparent with communication.

^^^
I've never noticed a problem. I just went into Options > Message Filters and added a new rule

"If Header contains X-Spam-Level: XXXX then move to INBOX.SPAM"

Haven't really had anything since, and no performance hit so far as I know

As with other Webmail and NCSU spam-blocking questions, please feel free to PM or e-mail me (ed_lee@ncsu.edu) with any questions. I'll be happy to help out.

The Webmail spam filter worked pretty well until that banner showed up on the top of Webmail -- then it just stopped working for me.

Well, we took the banner ad off once you've logged in (https://sysnews.ncsu.edu/news/45353183), but that shouldn't affect your ability to log in or view your mail. PM me with details, and I'll see what I can do to help you out. Thanks, Ed

Geez for the love of God, use Thunderbird! Built in spam-blocker...just give it a day or so to figure out what is and isn't spam (you have to give it a little bit of help) but after that it's good. It has a 'learning' filter, so the more it filters the more it knows how to sort through spam. It'll occasionally miss something but all you have to do is tell it that a particular message is junk and it learns some more..
It's completely configurable too.

Yeah, I saw that. It's not that I can't login or check my mail -- those work fine. I just found it highly coincidental that the second ITD put that "Tired of Spam?" banner all over Webmail that I got about a million times more spam.

Possibly so. The sad thing is that NCSU mail servers have been getting hit with a LOT of spam lately. A lot more than is typical. If you've been seeing more spam, I'd say the earlier suggestion of using a full e-mail client with additional filtering capabilities isn't a bad idea. That's the trouble with spam and spammers. They change their pitch and methods, and spam filters have to learn all over again.
