you know this completely depends on the crowd that will be there - why even bother mentioning this unless you are attempting to brag?

What do you mean "big let down"?

I mean, it's an auction for charity. What are you expecting that you could possibly be let down from?

You'll be the laughing stock of all your friends if you are the lowest bid... haha

If no one bids and he ends up going for $1, he'll regret it. He won't have raised any money for charity AND he goes out with an ugly chick that thinks she's doing him a favor.

The "date" is usually some kind of midday mixer where all the participants and all the winning bidders eat cookies and drink punch. You're under no obligation to continue contact past that.

You're asking the wrong crowd.

The way I see it the worst case scenario is you'll have a cool story to tell.

Best Case: you nab a hot chick.

I've actually participated in three of these - two where I was auctioned off, and one which I co-hosted.

People in attendance are there to have a good time, so it's all about working the crowd. Any non-verbal thing you can do (dance, make your chest muscles jump a la Super Macho Man, etc) is to your favor in terms of bids; I say non-verbal because chances are you'll be in a hall or auditorium without a microphone, and nobody will hear you if you try to sing or something.

If you're REALLY strung-out, arrange for two friends to attend, and have them counter-bid off each other one guy did that when I co-hosted (he told us way after the fact).

So just show up in something nice and be ready to have a good time, otherwise you'll hate it and feel like you wasted your time.
