can I connect to my network on my 360 by using a crossover ethernet cable from my laptop, which connects wirelessly, to the ethernet port on my xbox?

I assume that is a yes.

And this ends my venture into Tech Talk. I now see I can't come here for help.

yeah I did. I thought you were being sarcastic because I didn't see how that applied to a 360.

Here's a page on msft's website. at the bottom of the page is a segment dealing specifically with what you're doing. gephelps is right that you have to set up internet connection sharing on the pc you're using.

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/connecttolive/xbox360/connectionmethods/webconnectivitywizard.htm step by step connection help for the xbox 360. when it asks you for the manufacturer of the device the xbox 360 will be connected to, select "microsoft windows" and it should give you the internet connection sharing steps.

Here's info on setting up internet connection sharing in windows xp (that's what you have right?)

all right, so if I run the setup on this page: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/pcsetup on my laptop, I can connect my xbox with a crossover cable?

Quote :
"Hardware Instructions:

1. If you don't already have an Internet connection, set one up using the instructions provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Verify that your computer can access the Internet.

2. Configure Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to share your Internet connection. For more information about ICS, on the taskbar, click Start, and then click Help and Support. (or just go here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306126/)

3. Once ICS is configured, verify again that your computer can access the Internet.

4. Before you connect any cables, make sure there is no disc in the disc tray of your console.

5. Turn off your console and your computer.

6. If you have an external modem, turn it off and disconnect it from its power source.

7. Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on your computer, and the other to the Ethernet port on the back of your console.

8. Turn on your modem, computer, and console."
