Well the finally pulled it from the NCSU site, so I guess they aren't planning on revamping the thing. This is a slightly older copy, but if the interest is there, I can probably get the final version back live.

I was hoping it would have been some 3-d representation similar to this:

Oh well.

If someone wants to take the time to illustrate a campus map like that, I'd gladly use it

Pay me enough and I'll model the campus in AutoCAD.

not worth any money to me, just the after effects of a project worth sharing

i know you did this originally a couple years ago, before the days of Google Maps, but don't you think a modern version should be based on the Google or Yahoo Maps API? You can use the google map and hybrid view, and include the drawn NCSU map as a layer too, but allow the API to handle all the navigation and map-popups and stuff.

I think the maps like that are most helpful, a 3d representation isnt going to help afreshman find a building.

^^Yep, a google mashup could supercede this, but it does have its advantages.

Namely that you can save the webpage and view it offline, its extremely lightweight (the map page is ~100)

Google maps, at least for NCSU doesn't even have all the streets present, and the sat data is waay out of date, so I think it could be really confusing as a mashup between views

The university pretty constantly updates their Illustrator map renderings, so it's not like any more work really has to be done. This application runs off the university building index spreadsheet and I made an import utility for the Illustrator campus map.

It's not available to the public that I know of, but University Graphics maintains it

You know what would be usefull, a map with all the common locked doors of the buildings.

most of these buildings have probably already been done by someone in sketchup

^If they're in CAD, you should be able to bring them into ARCmap along with a database of heights. You could then use 3dGIS tools to add the vertical element. Now, add topo and you've got something really sweet.

uh, sketchup models are already 3D. And with the Sketchup/Google Earth combo, you skip all the steps you just mentioned.

But yea, 3d is pretty worthless for directions, just a novelty for a long time in the future.
