I've got this Sony Sdm-hs73 17" LCD that isn't working properly. Basically, it works fine for a few minutes and then the screen goes black. It is hooked to a laptop, but I've tried it on multiple machines so I know it's not an issue with the laptop.

Here is what I know:
- It will come back on if I do anything that refreshes the screen. That includes unplugging the cable and reattaching it. I can also change the resolution and when the screen clicks over to the new resolution it will come back.
- The green light at the bottom does not turn off or turn amber as it would if it went into "hibernate" mode. Leads me to believe that it is getting the video signal.
- I've tried a new analog video cable and that isn't the problem.

Has anyone seen anything like this? Any ideas on a fix?

Might be an internal energy-saving feature of the monitor, not related to any power-saving settings on the computers. You tried navigating through the menu/buttons on the monitor and seeing if it has anything like that? (Too lazy right now to look up the manual for that specific model )

Yeah...Nothing jumped out in the config menus so I restored it to defaults. Might be time to throw it on eBay for parts. The LCD still looks very nice...when it's working.

i don't know if i'd scrap it yet...has it worked well before and this is just a new thing? or has it always done this? i mean, if you want to scrap it, i'll give you $20 for it

but it seems to me that it's probably a setting somewhere

^^
Or a bad part. I'm not an electronics expert, but I'd try to get somebody reasonably knowledge to it for cheap (cheap as in beer, or cheap is in free) and getting an estimate on repairs before scraping it. Selling it for $20 and buy a new one for $200 would kinda suck when you spend $5 on the part and $50 on labor to fix it.

It's only worth ~$110 on eBay if it worked. I've got another 15" Samsung LCD that I'm using for the time being.

I'll probably just keep my eyes out for a while for one with a broken screen on eBay. If that doesn't work I'll sell it for parts since I'm sure there is someone out there that needs the screen.

Give it to an EE who enjoys challenges. But looking at this

makes me think your fucked on it. Second review down.

Is there a standard wiring for LCDs? There is basically just a power supply board and a controller board on the inside of the monitor. Neither of them has any obvious damage. I'm betting the issue is on the controller board just because of the way it is acting.

Anyone know if I could swap the power supply and controller board in from any LCD and plug up to this screen?

If so, I'd get something like this:

I have just acquired this same monitor from a customer and was hoping to find the parts to fix it. Its only problem is that it is too dim to operate. The customer was away for 6 months and when he returned, it was in this condition on the first start up. I have every diagnostic I could come up with and I believe it has to do with the lcd panel or cathodes on the panel. Are you to the point that you want to sell it already or should I be selling mine to you for parts. I was hoping to get another lcd up and running but at least one of us should get theirs one fixed. I you want to sell it and don’t mind a set price and not ebay then how much? And if you’d rather by mine then how much? And if you’d rather put it on ebay, then would you let me know?

At this point I'm considering all offers on it. I might put it on eBay in a week or two or I may just stick it in the attic until I can find parts. It's a great looking LCD.

The case and screen is all pretty much mint. Here's a link to pics and specs: http://tinyurl.com/y2jhw9

Well... If anyone is interested, make an offer for the unit (mine powers on with a dimm signal) and include what you think shipping (usps) from 96748 woulb be. Or if you wish to sell yours, tell me how much you would like for a unit that you have, with the a condition discripsion, and est shipping. If either sounds good then ok. we could even do a buy know on ebay if you want it to be more secure (maybe even adding in the ebay seller fee to the buyers price to make it fare, or half or whatever)
