Check Engine light just came on for my BMW. Can Autozone do a quick read for the codes or do I need to goto a local euro garage?

buy a cheap code reader... most of the ones that reset the oil light will also read general problem codes. The one my dad has does, and I think it was only about 40 or 50 bucks. Beats paying a shop every time.

Nevermind, they're more expensive than that.

autozone won't check cars older than 10 years evidently...although i wonder if they even have a tool for bmw vehicles

how much will a shop probably charge? if bmw do require their specific tool only any recommended places to check real quick?

If it's a BMW 1995 or older just use the put the key in acc position, tap the gas pedal trick to get the code.......I posted the exact instructions on here once but don't feel like typing them out again, just use google if you need to know the specifics

True.

But 130 bucks isn't that bad for never having to take your car to a shop without knowing exactly what's wrong with it before hand. It will probably cost you more than 130 to go to a Bmw dealership and close to that at most other shops.

I know for my car it costs $88 to hook it up to "their" machine, which isn't OBD but some proprietary Volvo bull.
