Considering each takes years of _related_ experience it doesn't really seem worth it. I know for the PE they are extremely picky about what counts towards experience. You have to be working under a PE and be doing work that they think progresses your engineering experience. They won't except time spent under a PE if you are just managing subcontractors or whatnot.

That being said I don't see the work experience overlapping between the two and would take ~8 years to get both (having to switch jobs/positions) halfway through.

Might be nice to have but I dunno if its worth the effort or practical.

I have my PE, and plan on trying to get my PLS in the next 4 years. I kind of want to get both licenses so that I'll have the option of starting my own consulting firm 15-20 years down the road.

I have my AAS in Surveying Technology and I am in the process of gaining a seat for the Spring SIT. I have often thought about finishing my CE Degree to pursue my PE, but right now it is not necessary due to the field I am in...construction. BTTT though, in my experience, the only people who maintain both licenses are the old school engineers who recieved their PLS when an engineer could get the PLS stamp without much of an application process.

I purchased the book "Mechanical engineering license review" several months ago to prep for the PE in April. I don't feel like I'm getting much out of this book. Can anyone suggest a good "practice exam" or a better review book? It sucks that I can't look through these books since nobody carries them in their stores.

FYI you can search the directory early and find out if you passed (PE, not FE) before the results are mailed. The directory is updated it several times a week for several weeks.

I always read threads like this and am always reminded that despite the fact that my job title has the word "engineer" in it, and despite the fact that my degree was in the COE, I'm still not a real engineer.

ah well, I wouldn't enjoy most of that stuff anyway.

haha, its alright, but I am just annoyed that when I started college (95) engineering was THE field to go into if you were smart, there was no debate. Only idiots did stuff like marketing, business, etc. If you made good grades, good ACT score etc you went into engineering, no debate, but now I see some fuckers I went to college with making the same if not more doing things like marketing and its depressing. I mean, its not like I hate the work, but I dont love it, but everyone made it sound like "oh you are smart? go into engineering, you will be driving around in a Porsche by 27, blah blah blah"

its all relative. engineering typically has the highest salaries right out of school (undergrad), but its also one of the tougher fields to move up in. .

other fields may start off lower, but moving up is easier.

you have to put in the extra effort (write papers, get published, get patents) if you want to really move up high in engineering. most engineers (that ive seen) arent ambitious enough to do that. too many people have the "im an engineer, i should get paid a lot just because of that" mentality.

yeah, and I realize that things go in cycles, like right now if you are a really smart high school student you are probably being pushed to go into some sort of biomedical field... it just annoys me that I could be doing something that I liked more, and still making the same money. Basically if I knew what I knew now, I wouldn't have gone into engineering, I would have done marketing, business or communications, but like I said, only "dumbasses" did those majors

no offense or anything, but you should have done what you liked regardless of money (to a certain extent, ie starving artist, etc).

engineering has always interested me...it was just a bonus that they pay was good.

Hell, the engineering mindset tends to transfer very nicely into business.

Or at least that's what I keep reading all over the place. Anecdotally, I'd definitely say that the best managers i've worked with are those who had a technical background, but I guess it all depends on what you're "managing"

yeah, I mean my line of work is one that definitely has a lot of business/managing aspects to it, already did a lot of that when I worked in Raleigh but not at the new job here in Atlanta yet so there is that... and I had already started on my PhD part time at State and now have to decide to continue that at GT or I might go for an MBA from UGA.

yeah, thats what I am looking at, UGA has a part time MBA in Buckhead (where I live in Atlanta) that would be really convenient but its still pretty damn time consuming and I travel A LOT for work so that would make things difficult

UGAs is sort of like that, but it reminds me of Army Natl Guard duty, you have to night stuff, and then one weekend a month you have to spend all night friday and all day saturday, and you also have to do a trip to europe or china, its expensive as fuck
