I'll give ya something that works...from actual experience
At the JC Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh (granted, not everything will be alive and beautiful in Dec.) there's a white gazeebo near the center of everything. I went there one night about 20 mins. before closing and it was empty, casually walked over to the gazeebo after walking around a bit and hit one knee.
Needless to say she was thrilled.
Good luck to him! 10/31/2006 8:48:24 AM |

Take her to Morehead Planetarium in Chapel Hill, then go to a secluded field somewhere, where you can see all the stars. It'll be romantic, but mostly she'll just have the idea of morehead in her head. 10/31/2006 8:53:38 AM |

what kind of red blooded american would go to fucking chapel hill, much less to propose? He went to State too, so that shitty idea is out

more important than finding "nice places" is finding a place that actually means something to both of them. At the top of the lighthouse in cape hatteras might be cool, but if neither of them knows anything about cape hatteras, or doesn't like going to the outer banks or something, it might not mean much in the future. But if both of them have a particularly special attachment to the sewer treatment plant in their hometown, then that's the place to do it. 10/31/2006 9:08:34 AM |

The Greystone Inn in Toxaway, NC is an awesome place to propose. It's a beautiful resort in the mountains, in front of this beautiful lake.
Or what about the Grove Park Inn resort in Asheville? I haven't stayed there before, but I hear it's pretty nice also.] 10/31/2006 9:17:53 AM |

Agreed. And it doesn't have to be a place necessarily, but the circumstances / surroundings that can make a difference. I proposed in my apartment to her, but I set it up such that it was something unique and special to both of us.10/31/2006 11:30:34 AM |

I'd go for somewhere you can return to. The honeymoon can be far away. But I wouldn't do it in an apartment complex or dorm or somewhere that you'll move out of in a year (if its your long term residence thats fine), but I think it would be nice to always be able to go back to the place you proposed even if it is 20 years down the road. 10/31/2006 12:02:13 PM |

I proposed at the top of Currituck lighthouse. It was special for her because she had never seen a lighthouse before and had always wanted to go see one. I woke her up one morning, told her to get dressed and we would be gone all day. She had no idea we were even going to the coast. 10/31/2006 12:03:03 PM |

^^ People do that way too much, I think. I saw it at least 3 times last year.
And once, there was a message saying "*Woman's name,* *Man's name* has something important to ask you" on the jumbotron, but then it cut to something else entirely. I kind of wonder what happened there.
Then again, it depends on the person. If she's into that kind of thing, it would be a good idea, even if it is a bit overdone. 10/31/2006 12:47:31 PM |

my friend proposed at the top of Court of Carolinas - the full moon traverses an arc above the court below and it also had sentimental meaning for them as well. probably wouldn't be the greatest place for a non-ncsu student though
