i have a cat that will not stop peeing on my bed. i wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt at first, thinking that maybe she just wasn't used to living here, but it hasn't stopped. does she pee on the floor? no. just on my bed. this is probably the 10th time it's happened, and i'm tired of washing my sheets so damn often. plus cat pee is like the most awful smell ever.
could this be some sort of infection, like a bladder infection? or is she just retarded? a trip to the vet seems to be in order. 10/31/2006 11:43:58 AM |

could be a urinary tract infection. at carrboro plaza vet clinic we all the time have cats with those. you can usually just bring in a urine sample to be dropped off to be tested without having to deal with bring the cat or having a wait. we charge around $35 for it, so your vet will probably charge something similar.

^^^lobes! oh noooesss!!!
^^so you're saying i could just bring in a sheet? haha oh i'm so funny. but yeah, i'm thinking i will do something. she was an indoor cat for a good 9 years, then she started peeing on beds so her original owners made her live outside. then i took her to live in my apartment, and it's just gotten worse. so hopefully it's something that can be fixed via medication, because she really is a sweet cat.
^i keep it clean, and she always has water and dry food, and 1/3 of a cat of wet food every morning. no reason to hate me

After having my 2 kittens spayed & neutered, the vet reccomended news paper shreads since that wouldnt get into the wound. The lack of the usuall feel to the litter caused the male cat to pee somewhere else. Only time either of them have ever done that.
Have you switched litter brands or boxes lately. Maybe theres something unusual to them about that litterbox.
I was told whenever you move to a new place, always set the cat in the litterbox before letting it roam around. Maybe you just need to set the cat there and keep it in there for a few secs a couple of times until it gets better acquainted with it? 10/31/2006 11:59:35 AM |

no changes. the litterbox and litter came from her original home. she's used it many times and knows it's there, and the door to the laundry room (where it's at) is always open. and i've had her for a few months now. it's just like once a week or so that she pees on my bed. once she pooped on it. never like behind the couch in the living room, or under a chair... always on my bed. the worst place she could do it.
i'm thinking that even though she's really sweet, she might have to go back to her original home and to living outside. there's only so much stinky pee on my bed i can take. 10/31/2006 12:06:03 PM |

No sorb is a product CPVC carries. Its all plastic pellets designed to feel like litter. If you can fill up the box with those and get her to pee there once, then you will have a urine sample they can use. 10/31/2006 12:07:59 PM |

I mean a urinary tract infection is something you'd want to treat even if the pet was going back to being an outside pet probably. You could always call your vet and leave them a message and them call you back to discuss it so that you can decide whether a urine test or something else is the right way to go. 10/31/2006 12:09:07 PM |

Cats WANT to pee in litter boxes, if they're not it's because something is up. Either kidney/etc problems or environmental problems. Where is her litter box? Is it in a nice quiet place away from her food? Cats HATE pottying near their food. My professor once put a big shopping bag near her cats litter and it stopped using the litter until the bag went away. Cats can be picky little bastards. One of my chinchillas insists on peeing on beds, so I solved the problem by closing my door and not allowing her anywhere near a bed. 10/31/2006 12:44:32 PM |

hmmmm.. i did not know that about the food near a litter box thing. litter box and food/water are in the laundry room, because it's really the only place for it. i could put the food under the little bar/counter thing we have. it would be out of the way there, too. interesting. although she does pee in there usually, it's really just once a week or so that she does it on my bed. weird. i'll move it.
also, yeah, i just lock her out of my room unless i'm in it. although this morning i was eating breakfast, and the my bedroom door had been open maybe 15 minutes before she comes running out. yeah, she had peed on my bed. 10/31/2006 8:54:48 PM |

FYI since no one else has mentioned it ... you are likely going to have to get a new matress/pad/whatever. You might not be able to smell the cat urine in your sheets, but the cat can.
Try Feliway ... yes, it's expensive, but it works. My cat kept peeing under a papasan chair in the living room -- we had to rip out the NEW laminate flooring thanks to her -- but I plugged in one of the air freshener things right behind it (humans can't smell it) and it has worked. She hasn't peed anywhere but in her litterbox for a few months now, although she does believe any fabric item within a few feet is also fair game. She also peed on the couches ... but with Nature's Miracle, the plug-in, and then the spray directly on the cushions it has stopped. 10/31/2006 9:33:37 PM |

Do you have a down comforter or a down pillow top on your bed? My cats have had peeing problems in the past and I did a lot of research on this topic. For some reason, many cats are prone to urinating on things that contain down.
Also, I read that keeping the litter box in the laundry room could cause a cat to use the bathroom elsewhere, because the sound of the machines makes them nervous. And on the topic of litter boxes, some cats will not use the litter box unless it is VERY clean, so not changing the litter enough can cause them to go elsewhere.
Finally, you should definitely take your cat to the vet first, to rule out any health problems and then go from there. 11/1/2006 1:29:13 PM |

After about a month of moving into a new apartment, our cat is doing the same thing. About once a week she will pee on the sofa chair. Only there, nowhere else. There seems to be no correlation to the cleaning of the litter box. We clean it every few days now just to be sure. So if you find out whats wrong with your cat, let me know 11/1/2006 3:02:30 PM |

I read this thread and, unless I missed it, no one asked if she's spayed. If she's not, that will cause her to mark her territory, which could include your bed. The only time our cats have peed outside of the box was once when we fostered a kitten for about a week and he peed in the corner of the room. They decided to pee there too. We moved, but before we did, it was hard to get the smell out and we never completely got it out to the point where the cats didn't smell it. So, yeah new mattress/sheets is definitely in order for you. I wouldn't go out and spend money on that until you find out what the problem is though. Consulting the vet is the best idea. Also, cats don't take lightly to being scolded. If you pop her or yell at her for peeing on the bed or anything like that, she's likely to just be more sneaky about doing it. 11/1/2006 10:33:52 PM |

Okay, well.
1. do the thing with talking to your vet 2. Just because you cant smell cat pee, doesnt mean she cant. You're unfortunately going to need new sheets, blanket, mattress whatever else she's peed on repeatedly if you want her to not associate your bed with the litterbox, however, dont do it just yet as you dont wanna ruin the new stuff. 3. pick up a copy of cats for dummies (not that you are one), there's a part in there if i recall) about re-training a cat to a litterbox - which might help if the problem is behavioral, not biological (UTI etc).
An important question here is- does your cat seem to "know" that what she did was bad? Or, does your cat seem to be doing it when she's upset or angry at you for some reason? 11/2/2006 12:15:13 PM |

Your cat definitely has a internal problem, possibly urinary tract or some kidney complication. Your cat is NOT having a good time (cue ytmnd), definitely take her to the vet. My cats have had this problem before. It could be caused by the food the cat is eating also; a certain brand of cat food (Purina? I can't remember what the brand is) has little crystals in it that clump together inside your cat and eventually make your cat very uncomfortable. Talk to the vet.
If your having trouble with the cat wanting to replace her litterbox with your bed (I've never heard of that, strangest thing ever) then, well, close your door! Don't let the damn cat in there. I don't think you'll need a new bed, go to the vet first before going out and buying stuff.
And, in case you missed it, I'll say it again: Talk to the vet. 11/2/2006 4:39:09 PM |

i clean her litterbox regularly.
she eats science diet food, that's pretty good stuff, with 1/3 a can of wet food every day.
i do close my door when i'm gone, but when i'm here it's open. she also sleeps on my bed, because if i close my door at night then she just paws at it and meows and i can't sleep anyways.
i can't put her outside because she would freak out.. we live on the 3rd floor in an apartment right next to a busy road, and i've seen stray cats around here that would probably beat her up. 11/2/2006 4:44:14 PM |

^^I agree she needs to see a vet...but this cat has been doing this for over a year it seems...so I really think her or the previous owner would have already checked bladder problems. Likewise, if it was medical and had been going on for a year, the cat would be showing way worse signs by now...like dead. 11/2/2006 5:19:04 PM |

it's cheaper to get rid of the cat. yes, i know it sounds harsh but sometimes that is what is required. i had a cat that wouldn't quit pissing in a corner of a bedroom. i tried everything. even pulled up the carpet and applied stainblock to the subfloor to get rid of the odor. needless to say, the cat doesn't piss anywhere in the house anymore.11/2/2006 9:08:40 PM |

No, it's the pee part. If a cat pees there once, she will feel that she needs to pee there from now on unless you completely remove the smell (get a new mattress/sheets). Cats mark almost everything with their scent. Even when they rub up against your hand, they are marking you with scent glands on the sides of their face. However, pee is different. If they pee there once, they associate it as their territory in which they can pee whenever they want.11/3/2006 9:42:40 AM |

put a litter box (and make sure it is cleaned VERY often) in the room somewhere near the place of the mishaps- cats are extremely clean animals and if they dislike the location, or cleanlines of their "bathroom" those little bastards will do what it takes to prove a point.

1. take the cat to the vet.
worms can be rid of with a simple perscription that you "feed" to the cat.
2. as for the peeing, get another secondary litter box and put it near the area of incidents. 11/29/2006 10:10:36 AM |

my cat has completely stopped peeing on the bed, and is much happier since i took her to the vet. she did have fleas, even though we never saw one and no one ever got bit. (i thought we would have noticed, because my roommates both get allergic reactions when bit.) so i think that the peeing was a way to get attention to her flea problem.. because it stopped once we got rid of the fleas.
^drunknloaded, it might be the same with your cat. maybe something is wrong and it's just trying to get attention. about the worms.. here's a website that tells about worms: http://www.cat-lovers-only.com/worms-in-cats.html 11/29/2006 9:19:31 PM |
