Libertarian socialist is the way to go. 11/8/2006 5:33:22 PM |

^most anarchists i have met have been social libertarians. it's noble, i like the ideas and it would be an ideal system imo. people brand noam chomsky as a socialist, when in reality he's a social libertarian, and the leading perspective on that train of thought. unfortunately, we dont live in an ideal world and people are selfish. i really admire leo tolstoy's "christian anarchism", it's had a great deal of influence on me. it's unrealistic considering the weberian "iron cage of rationality" we've built, so it's really a very idealistic perspective. I would still greatly recommend "The Kingdom of God Is Inside You", for a good read. It's probably the most influential book as far as my life goes. 11/8/2006 5:53:14 PM |

When I hear "Libertarian socialist" I think merely "voluntary socialist" which basically means they wish everyone would voluntarily participate in a socialist system but are unwilling to make them. Examples are very common, such as a commune or an extended family, where participants are free to leave whenever they wish.
The problem only arrises when socialists realize most people will refuse to participate and decide they must make them participate through the use of force or the threat of force. 11/8/2006 7:35:30 PM |

I've written a great deal personally about my personal beliefs on this. I identify as a libertarian socialist/anarcho-syndicalist, with international cooperation b/w business cooperatives or whathaveyou to help maintain international trade and exchange of ideas. I despise the idea of a state imposing socialism. I detest Leninist socialism, or any authoritarian socialism for that matter. However, until such a system can be achieved, I'm content with an ethical liberal government and capitalism with great decentralization of powers, which is why I value the power of local and state governments much more than national governments.
A great example of a social libertarian/anarcho-capitalist institution would be a co-op farm or factory or the Catholic Workers Assoc. They might be critical of some abuses of capitalism, but they accept it as the only real way of providing for the world efficiently. Another suprising example would be the Mormon community. I disagree with their religion, but their communities and education systems (they organize church-taught classes in finances, computer skills, and other necessary work skills) are great examples of social libertarianism. I was fortunate enough to grow up in one, without actually being Mormon (most of my neighbors were).
Idealist, I know. At least I have convictions and don't just accept the status quo/two-party democracy we've accepted so heartily in America.

^Modern politics must make you shit yourself then...centralized power...raping states' rights, etc.
A good example of this for me is the gay marriage deal. That should be a state issue. The federal government should GFTO and let each state decide if it will recognize marriages from other states, etc.
Even in my state (SC) I voted against the Marriage Amendment but it passed. I hate that for my state, but it isn't the federal government's place to get involved in it, so I guess I'll deal with it and eventually hope the amendment is repealed by referrendum. 11/8/2006 9:52:30 PM |

^i didnt realize they had a referendum. that really sucks. We are now surrounded by states that outlaw homosexual marriage. damn

Yeah we did. I think Arizona is the only state to have a referrendum and not pass it so far.
I'm disappointed, but not surprised. The local social conservatives did a fantastic job making people think the amendment banned only gay marriage, when it actually bans civil unions as well.
John McCain even lent his voice to telephone calls in the area saying he supported the amendment. Trumping primary votes for '08 is my guess. I was to hear his voice on the other end of the line. I'm so log-cabin republican on this [no homo] 11/8/2006 9:58:44 PM |

lol, I see what you mean. But without the few to stand up and tell the social conservatives to go fuck themselves (or someone, for the love of Science) it will never happen. 11/8/2006 10:23:58 PM |

the social conservatives have big bucks and are vital to the political interests from the monetary standpoint of the GOP, from what I gather. the fellow that got arrested last week was loaded, and a big contributor. bush speaks with him every monday by phone.
