My car (98 Grand Marquis) is pushing out cold air but won't convert to heat. I'm guessing that it is a heater core problem. Had the hoses that lead to the heater core flushed with running water to get rid of rust that had built up, but that wasn't the solution. Haynes manual isn't helping me out much either. Got a quote on how much it would cost to fix at dealership - about $900. Being a college student, I simply don't have this money. Was wondering if anyone could refer me to someone that might be willing to do such work for less that a grand. I thoroughly appreciate ANY help that people may have to offer. It's getting cold outside and I need some heat.

could be any number of things, i wouldn't assume its the heater core right off the bat
if you have had the heater hoses off, i would suspect air in the sytem, it can be a pain on those
1. disconnect the heater hose on the passenger side of the engine 2. remove the t-stat housing and t-stat (good time to replace it) 3. fill the engine with coolant through the t-stat opening until it runs out the heater hose connection on the engine 4. reconnect the heater hose 5. fill the resevoir 6. turn the heat on max with the coolant cap off until it warms up, top it off, replace the cap, enjoy the heat

Bet the blend door is not opening under the dash....my old Lincoln had a rotted out vacuum line to the HVAC system and the blend door woulfd not open, but for me it meant everything was on defrost. run it then touch the heater core lines and make sure they are getting hot. 11/11/2006 5:43:48 PM |

the heater core lines are def. getting hot. i suspected that it might be a vent or something thats not opening. does that mean that im going to have to get someone to take my DASH apart??? 11/12/2006 11:01:34 AM |

my brother is having the same problem with a 99 crown victoria. it's the flap in the dash that controls the blend of hot/cold air. the problem is it takes a whole lot of work to disassemble the dash to get to it. 11/12/2006 11:38:24 AM |

yeah. i wanted to believe that i wasnt going to have to get someone to take my dash apart to get the job done, but i can see thats what its coming down to. anyone know of any places that may be able to work with me as far as labor, maybe student discounts or something??

there it is in a nutshell, i have been busy as hell lately, but if you could bring it by my house tonight i could take a look at it for you, the whole dash doesnt have to come apart, hell you can pull the heater core in less than an hour, much less down to the point of acessing the actuators

yup, it was the electronic blend door actuator, the dash has got to come out, but glancing over the procedure in alldata, it doesnt look like to bad of a job, thank god for modern assembly lines and sub-assemblies, just gotta pull the column, unplug one harness, take out some bolts, and two hours later, the whole thing should come right out , so i can get to two little screws on the top of the actuator 11/12/2006 11:36:08 PM |

^ 99% of those problems are either an actuator or air in the system, that doesnt count, now if it were somthing comlplicated, then you could call it 11/13/2006 11:25:51 AM |
