that writer is doing a week long series on the NC State basketball situation. He's actually done a pretty damn good job so far....its actually pretty responsible journalism.

reading this, you get the idea that it's now or never, in terms of getting back to perennial national prominence

and man, even though i suppose that's never really the case, it sure does feel like it

hahaha...so because the article is Pro-State this time, it's quality writing and solid journalism?

That sounds about par for the course around here.

^read the whole series, I wasnt refering to the article in particular. These guys are doing a week long series on the NC State situation.

They have written some stuff that I didn't like too, but its always backed up and the article doesn't leave you feeling like they just took a shit on your school...unlike most of the shit we read.

What makes it responsible journalism is that it addresses all points of views. He tells you the ugly stuff, and then gets quotes from NC State people to qualify the ugly stuff. Its not denying the fact that we're jealous, loud, and obnoxious, its just pointing out that its ok to be like that.

Dick Vitale is the man.

Just because he says things that you people don't like, you hate him.

And he has tons of respect for NC State.

Closest we came was against Duke in 03

FUCK...WE LOST A 20 POINT LEAD THAT DAY B/C OF THE WEAVE AND HEAVE OFFENSE.

Then we had the best team for it in 04...2nd in the ACC and already beaten the #1 team....THEN WE LOST ANOTHER 20 POINT LEAD IN THE SEMIFINALS TO MARYLAND.

05 we just got lucky to make the finals...which is fine b/c its progress....Then we got lit up by JJ....AGAIN. (oh and the fact that we couldnt make a basket...taht didnt help)

And we would have won that one if we had had non-ACC officials--Duke was allowed to rape us in the second half, especially down the stretch.

That's not a list of the things Herb did wrong. That's a checklist of what we need. And while Herb satsified that requirement, it was the others that led to the pressure to leave.

As long as you make it to the tournament, does it matter if you lost to UNC or Duke?

I'm not a herb basher per say....I agree that those were all good wins, but with the exception of UConn, there wasn't anything huge riding on any of those wins......not to mention if you can only come up with 4 big wins in a decade (especially when we play duyke and unc twice a year), something is wrong.

Why could we get to the ACC tourney championship so many times but not pull 1 off even with huge leads @ half time?

Herb did what he was brought here to do, but it's time for a new chapter, period.

^^ You should word that:

As long as you beat Duke & UNC, does it matter if you make it to the tournament?

This year, no. It wouldn't matter. Typically, beating UNC and/or Duke was always our biggest achievement, because we'd fizzle out in the tourney regardless

EDIT: And it was indeed a great article, but the BOOSTER'S points were a bit off. We have indeed smashed Chuck for "promising" championships and losing like nobody's business.

^^ My point is that despite reaching the tourney the past several years in a row, fans are more concerned with the rivalry they have with their friends/family/co-workers that went to these schools than the team's overall performance each season.

^i think beating unc and duyke go hand in hand with successful seasons. One reason being, if we want to win the acc reg season or tourney, we will most likely have to beat one or both at least once....maybe as many as 3 times in a given year.

C'mon buddy, you're shooting yourself in the foot here. With Herb Sendek, you could count on one thing for sure: LOSING in the 1st (or 2nd, if we're lucky) round of the tourney EVERY YEAR.

Ever met a REAL diehard Colts fan? Do you wonder why people aren't taking last weekend's victory over the Pats seriously? Because regardless of how incredible the Colts play in the regular season, people still expect (and they're probably right) the Colts to lose quickly in the post-season.

Regardless of a perfect regular season, fans are gonna be pissed with ALWAYS losing when it counts. Thus, our pain w/ Herb.

We won our first round game every year but the year that Cal pulled a 3 at the buzzer out of their ass.

Part of it in the NCAAs has been bad luck: Freijie going off on us, the phantom intentional foul on Melvin, the foul on Hodge when Caron Butler was shooting a 3. Our NCAA success was not that bad.

Let's just go to the NIT so we can advance far.

^ What you're missing is that with Herb, there was no excitement or thrill ever, because no matter who we beat and boasted about, some gay (and correct) UNC fan would say: "Heh, you guys are toast in the tourney, no matter what." And they were right. Every year it was pointless to invest emotion in our basketball squad because we KNEW the outcome before the season ever started.

At least with Lowe, there's a slim glimmer of hope. There's that *chance* to pull off some miracles in the year's to come whereas Herb would never up his emotional investment in our club to achieving the impossible for State. The same glimmer of hope won it big in '83, and Lowe knows what it feels like to win when you shouldn't. At least now State fans have REAL hope. Herb was a guarenteed loser in the tournament year in and year out.

^^^ I guess I'm just not willing to believe that the outcome of a 64 team elimination tournament can be determined by a coach simply outcoaching 5 other coaches in consecutive games. Or that a team should win because its fans feel a greater sense of entitlement than the others'.

There are too many factors involved with winning the NCAA to be dissappointed in not winning it in a couple of appearances.

^^^ to me that is a pipe dream. '83 was '83. It will never happen again, period. No matter how many players from that team we bring back to the staff. I don't understand the desire to recreate that team every year, since it's impossible.

Villanova doesn't cling to '85 like this. I'm all for remembering and honoring that team but decisions shouldn't be made and hope shouldn't be continually drawn from it. It's a once in a lifetime type of thing..
