Might be able to get a job in Waynesboro, which is about 15 miles west of Charlottesville.
The only thing I know about charlottesville is that it's where UVA is and monticello
Anyone have any comments on the area? like cost of living, etc 11/12/2006 12:01:28 AM |

My parents live on Lake Monticello, a big "suburb" of Charlottesville on the eastern side and they have lived up there for a year now.
I love it up there personally and plan to eventually get a job and move up there. Public schools are very good up there (big deal for me with 2 kids). Housing is expensive in C-Ville, but not that bad outside of town. The area is beautiful. Charlottesville has tons to do. Just look at the Downtown Mall. Its one of the largest outdoor pedestrian malls in the country. The Paramount Theater is down there and has a LOT of different plays, singers, and comedians coming through there. Hell, Charlottesville was ranked the best place to live in some book of city rankings in 2004.
Waynesboro is a little more blue collar jobwise, but is a bit cheaper. It has some nice shopping and stuff on its own too. You have one main ridge to cross to get up to Waynesboro from Charlottesville, but housing is even cheaper. And its pretty crackeriffic up that far. I'm also a fan of running down Skyline Drive up there. 11/12/2006 8:43:47 AM |

thanks
i interviewed on-campus for a job with this company to hopefully get the position at their wilmington, nc plant, because i have a house 10 min from there. but i think they felt that plant wasn't within my scope (it was more chemistry than textile engineering) so im assuming the waynesboro plant is more fiber-spinning, etc.
but i was at the clemson game yesterday and got a voicemail from the HR guy in waynesboro, va. so i just wanted to get some info on the area 11/12/2006 10:23:21 AM |

I would seriously jump at the chance, even if it ain't Wilmington. Its not even that big of a trip to VA Beach from C-Ville or Waynesboro, just go down the interstate till it runs out. 11/12/2006 10:45:30 AM |

i wikipedia'd Waynesboro and it looked like Dunn, NC so I probably wouldn't want to live in that town. Charlottesville sounds nice, but the consensus of high cost of housing kinda worries me. 11/12/2006 12:06:27 PM |

This Inn, connected to campus/downtown, is owned by the university and is the original site of the chapel in chapel hill.
I know people call Charlottesville "the Chapel Hill of VA", but do people in VA call Chapel Hill "the Charlottesville of NC"?

is the quickest way to get there from raleigh REALLY to go all the way to Richmand on I-85 just to turn directly left onto I-64 for another 2 hours to charlottesville?
i see all these back roads i could take to be more direct, but the speed limits and small towns in between could be murder on patience 11/13/2006 12:39:50 PM |
CPKontalonis All American 8345 Posts user info edit post |
it's only an hour from Richmond to Charlottesville via 64
maybe even a little less
and yes that is the best way to go
you can also take 95
I've had many a debate about which way to go but I prefer the 85 vs. the 95

the edge i was basing that on was appalachian terrain/climate, not man made structures of the university itself...i'm a sucker for mountains and valleys...not to mention snow in the wintertime instead of a cold, steady rain
--
the route i have been taking for 12 years is us-1->85->95->64 (then to 81 for me)
there's a new bypass that goes around the congested part of 95 before you get to richmond...but i'm blanking on the number at the moment
richmond to charlottesville should be about 45-50 min

it goes right around all the clusterfuck that is that downtown richmond 95/64 interchange...not sure if it would help you if you were trying to go to richmond, but good lord it makes my drive to the shenandoah valley way more gravy

Chapel Hill gets snow sometimes, but I agree it's not much on mountain and valleys. Just rolling hills, which can still look nice from the right vantage points.
