Bobby probably said something to the effect of, "son, either you're gone, or we're both gone.. it was a tough decision"

All I can hear right now in my head is the Mormon Tabernacle Choir singing "Ode to Joy" over and over again.

This is one of the greatest days of my life.

oh and look for the announcement tomorrow. Lil Jeffy to NC State for OC. Bobby is probably on the phone with chuckles right now.

Chuck: Hello, I'm the man.
Bobby: Well, ya know, I've helped you out by letting you beat us the past couple years and I wanted to know if you could do me a favor.
Chuck: Sure thing pa, what ya need?
Bobby: As you know, Jeff resigned and i was wondering if you could maybe pick him up.
Chuck: You betcha, cause I'm The Man. This means that you'll let me win next year right?
Bobby: Maybe, we'll have to talk about it.

Jeff Bowden receives $537,000 buyout
Associated Press

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State offensive coordinator Jeff Bowden received a $537,000 buyout from the school's boosters to resign.

The settlement was revealed Wednesday when the school released a copy of the agreement Bowden's attorneys reached with the university and its boosters. The resignation takes effect Nov. 26, a day after the season finale against Florida.

Bowden -- youngest son of head coach Bobby Bowden -- retains his present $141,000 salary until his contract expires next August. He will then receive annual payments of $107,500 until August 2012.

The agreement, dated Nov. 14, was signed by Jeff Bowden, whose legal first name is George, and Andy Miller, president of Seminole Boosters, Inc.

Bowden had been under fire for the past several years as Florida State's offense declined and his dad defended his performance.

But with Bobby Bowden's contract expiring in January of 2008, it was uncertain how the university was willing to negotiate an extension while Jeff Bowden remained on staff.

"It's just amazing," Bobby Bowden said Wednesday. "When things go wrong the first thing they blame is the offensive coordinator. That's kind of the game we Americans play."

this isnt the first Bowden boy to have this happen though, seems like trend...Amato could be considered a Bowden boy IMO.

I would tend to play our lack of offense on our offensive coordinator. I mean, who else is there to blame?

yup, must be nice to suck at your job and get paid to not do it for 5 years...

I've always wondered with deals like that in sports if the payments stop if the person gets hired by someone else...

As I understand it, if you're under contract to make $100,000 / year for five years, that's what your total compensation has to be. So if you're let go from School A, and School B hires you for $80,000 / year, then School A makes up the difference by paying you $20,000. If School B pays more than $100,000, School A is no longer on the hook to pay you anything. When there are deals made when someone "resigns" I don't know how that works, and it's probably just a matter of how good your agent / lawyer is.

This is, of course, just how I understand it and there's a damn good chance I'm completely wrong. A DAMN good chance.

yeah, you're completely wrong

what you explained is sometimes the case if a player is traded

if a coach is fired or if his contract is bought out, a sum is determined by the coach and organization and that sum is paid over x number of years after the two part ways

during that time, if the coach seeks employment elsewhere, his compensation is in no way directly determined by his prior contract

--

naturally, a coach who resigns isn't typically offered a compensation package

but a coach who "resigns" winkwinknudgenudge is a different story
