So my HDTV only has a DVI input on it- I recently hooke dup my PS3 which only has HDMI output- I purchased a "plug in" of sorts that connects to the DVI port on TV that has an DVI on one side and HDMI on the other- plugged the HDMI from PS3 to converter which should switch to DVI

when i switch to the video source for DVI i don;t get any picture.....

not sure why-

also- the DVI port on the TV has a block of little pins- however the adapter plug in has the same size block so it fits- but there are not as many pins- it is 2 smaller sections of them

any help is greatly appreciated

thanks

Your tv is likely not HDCP compatable. That would be my first guess. You may have to use componenent.

ok- what does the "CP" stand for- it is HD "ready" and from what i understand should have no problem with this-

also- if i do have to go with components then components are going to look shitty

At the risk of encouraging somebody to not google such a trivial matter, "CP" stands for "Content Protection".

You will have to use component cables or get a less shitty TV.

i actually already googled it and figured that out- i still don;t undertstand why it won't work though.

In other words- why is there a dvi connection if i can;t use it for high def.??? that makes little sense to me

and yes- i am a n00b in the home theatre are- i don;t know that I would necessarily call it a shitty tv since i spent over 2 grand on it-

component is only going to allow me to get 720p resolution right? this being said- blue ray is going to look like shit?

Does your TV even support 1080p? As far as I know, any TV that supports that is nice/new enough to support HDCP.

Basically, HDCP is a copy protection scheme that only allows transmission of signals to trusted devices (somebody correct me if I'm wrong). If your TV doesn't support HDCP, then your PS3 has no way of knowing that you aren't recording the signal, and it was built to prevent that.

But, yeah, I don't think your TV does 1080p anyway, and the PS3 doesn't do 1080i, so it's 720p one way or the other.

damnit--- i guess this is all inconsequential.... I know that my tv doesn;t do 1080p- this whole fiasco was to get it 1080i--- why in the hell wouldn;t PS3 support 1080i when there are but a handfull that "truly" have a native 1080p and almost all have 1080i---

another n00b question- 1080i is of course better than 720p.... some guy at best buy said it was not- that it goes up in "i" and then in "p" for quality---

i guess I have a lot more research to do- but why would sony have 720p and 1080p and not the more common high def 1080i?

i am assuming u are 100% postitive on that they do not?

i dont know shit about tv's either really, but come the fuck on.

how do you figure 720p is so obviously worse than 1080i besides that the number is lower?

[Edited on November 19, 2006 at 9:42 PM. Reason : and nowadays 720p is pretty standard]

i believe that you have to enable the hdmi out on the ps3. if i remember correctly, you have to hook up the ps3 via component and then go through the menu to enable hdmi.

the ps3 DOES do 1080i, however most games out now run at 720p.

Can anyone post a good reason for a video game to require HDCP?

Did you people just make that shit up, or did sony really implement something that retarded (wouldnt be surprising really considering the company)?

No, and I can't post a good reason for my DVR to have it either, but it does.

But if the games don't have HDCP, that's cool.

720p and 1080i are equivalent to each other. It's very debateable which one is better visually

Just use whatever the native resolution of your screen is.

^ yeah, just use whatever the native resolution on your tv is, though you probably won't be able to tell a difference. my tv has a native res of 720 and it looks slightly better than when its running 1080i.

yeah, hdcp is a freaking joke. my boy had to buy a specific upconvert dvd player that was hackable so that he could run it hdcp free through dvi.

Usually the DVI->HDMI converter is used on the output device, not the input one.
