Does anybody who's been up to snowshoe know of some good lodges/condo's to stay in for a decent price @ Snowshoe? I've got a group of about 12 trying to get up there adn stay in a decent place for relatively cheap. THANKS!

Best price, decent rooms, and REALLY: village central is where you want to stay. Ski in/out, no bussrides. They do bus you to night skiing areas if you want, though-- but you can drive too. Snowshoe's gotta be the best east coast skiing....

nothing in the nc mountains is any good

the best skiing on the east coast is up in vermont...

snowshoe is ski-able, but not vermont good

vermont is easily 12 hours away

therefore

you wont find anything in a 10 hour radius

denver is 23 hours driving time,

ive done it. twice. i ski out west almost every year

and thats the edge of the rockies

so no, you wont find anything worth skiing besides snowshoe within 10 hours of raleigh.

I THINK that is where we stayed last year when I went. I can't remember though. It was pretty much on the slopes and the hot pool was right next to our room. Good times...

This year I'm going to South Tahoe a few times though!

^^ you can do the Pocono's in less than 10 hours.. though I personally don't think anything there is much better than Snowshoe..

For all but the die hardest of skiier, snowshow can be a very good place for your time/money investment if you keep an eye on the snow report/weather conditions and you can get up there during the week.

A buddy and I have an understanding that if the conditions are right (ie, a front drops 10-20 inches on the resort) during the week, we'll just take off and go and hammer it until our legs fall off.

Sure beats packing all your shit up and paying big time fees for flight travel and lodging when all you need is a little fix to hold you over for awhile.

You can stay 30 minutes away at the Marlington Motor Inn for around $50/person per night, but with that many people you should be able to do better by getting a Snowshoe condo and loading up with air mattresses.

dont know if im putting in bad dates, but those places for midweek days are $300+/night + taxes/fees....thats a lot on top of the $65 lift ticket

hey dumbass. there are some pretty damn good mountains between snowshoe & killington. much closer than vermont. if you can't find them, you don't deserve to ski them. enjoy your 14 hour drive.

Ahhh....I'm going to Keystone for Christmas. I can't fucking wait. My 2nd ski trip out West. It only makes it that much harder to ski on the East.

As for Snowshoe, if you want really cheap and last minute your best bet is The Snowshoe Inn. The rooms are ehh, but are clean and have big beds, and there's a pool and hot tub and restaurants and all. Buuut, you have a short drive up the mountain, it's at the bottom, and everything else is at the top.

^that short drive is at least 20 minutes, more if you're stuck behind a slow SUV/Minivan or if there's snow/ice on the road.

It was in the upper 60s in Denver yesterday. I'll be skiing a lot, but I won't be staying in the Moutains. People get the wrong idea that Denver is always really cold...it's actually pretty good weather.

And right now...I'd rather ski in Colorado than surf in Costa Rica. I haven't been skiing in a couple years...I go surfing at least once a month. We just had head-high down here in Charleston too...which is pretty rare.

the passes for breck, keystone, copper mtn, arapahoe, etc, usually give you a half day over at vail, which is a ~20-30 min drive. i highly recommend the backside of the main vail mountain...

however, depending on how long you are there you might not have time to ski close to everything

Camp Four Townhouses are nice. Not sure about the price, I always go in a large group, but you can ski right out on to the slopes.

see that's my point though...not to be a ski snob or a rockies snob in general, but that was why i said there are no good mountains south of vermont...

wintergreen is the best you can get ~3-4 hours out...but it's predominately ice. i for one would rather ski for real than just slide down the fucking mountain scraping the fuck out of my skis...

but i definitely do it anyways because it's close

Maybe we have different definitions of die-hard ski bum...if you've ever skiied out west, you're pretty much spoiled. the snow is nice out there, but the really good thing, to me at least, is the fact that the places out there are BIG, so they're not so crowded...and people out there, at least on the blues and blacks, actually know how to ski. skiing in the east is like driving during rush hour...waaaay too many people, and 95% of them don't know shit about what they're doing. they get in the way--it's hard to ski hard without taking a risk on running someone over (i've done it...took out an old man who was snowplowing down a black diamond, because if i hadn't, i would've crushed a little kid. neither of them had any business being anywhere near that particular slope).

the other good thing is that there is some no-shit challenging terrain out there. i've never skiied new england, but in NC/VA/WV, you can just point yourself towards the bottom of probably over half of the "expert" slopes and never even have to turn...just run it tucked, if you want. if you do that out west, you would in for one helluva crash in short order.
