"OK, I'll readily admit I enjoyed last year's Hold Steady album (haven't heard this year's yet), and the cram-packed show at 506 was fairly amusing for 15-20 minutes or so, until the 200+ fanboys in the room started to become just a little too much to take, what with the singing along & the yelling things and the one dude down front sprinkling beer on the lip of the stage like holy water. We spent some time trying to distinguish the ironic mullets from the unironic mullets, and then we split for fresh air & freedom.

In case you missed it entirely: Springsteeny anthem-rock, ostensibly about the street kids frontman Craig Finn grew up with/around/among; the lyrics are 88-miles-a-minute, and delivered with a drawly sneer that makes Mike Ness sound like Alistair Cooke."

There is nothing wrong with singing along. A band like the Hold Steady should be loud enough that you can't hear anyone who isn't amplified. Yelling between songs can get annoying, but I don't remember many shows that didn't happen at.

And I might try and make this one.

There's nothing wrong with singing along, but when EVERYONE is doing it for more than a song or so, I might as well be at a party instead of a live show. I remember flipping channels and seeing a Dashboard Confessional special on MTV, and everyone in the studio was singing and you couldn't hear Carraba. Granted, that's not a bad thing, but if I had paid to see him I'd be pissed if all I could hear was John Q. Slitshiswrists.

I saw one with the Dashboard dude where he was singing 3 feet away from the mic, or not singing at all. What a douche.
