I don't know if I can get to 10, but here is the list thus far.

Alli With An I
The Scaries
Between The Buried And Me
Darkest Hour
Lieutenant Dan

those are the only real "inspiring" ones off the top of my head.

Chuck Klosterman has some interesting commentary on all of this, but my memory eludes me at the moment.

mine are listed for different reasons. Such as 3-6...I dont see them as changing my life in a deep way, but because of them, i was opened up to a shit load of other artists. cds they guested on, guests they had on their releases, artists they released on their label, artists they produced for, DJs that released them, etc.

the first show I ever went to was at ECU's Pirate Underground. I think I was either 15 or 16 at the time, and I was going to see my high school superheroes aka Alli With An I play there. Unforgettable performance that will always be with me. During the same night I was introduced to BTBAM with the original lineup and I had never heard anything of this nature. While I was in a band during high school I got to play with Alli as well as The Scaries in a skate park across from my house. They covered Master of Puppets but included Andrew WK references throughout. Darkest Hour stems from just loving their music from early on and seeing them play it live at Friction Fest in Greensboro at Somewhere Else Tavern. That night was hell on earth and it ruled hard. Lt Dan will forever hold a special place in my heart.

Ive always had a bad taste for Darkest Hour. In their early days they did a split 7" with my friends band, Groundzero, and it was awful. I know the line up, and style changed...but i could never give them a second chance.

I remember playing a house show with All with an I once. It was this rich girl in Apex who went to high school with me, and they set up on a stage in the garden and we set up on the deck facing them and as our set ended we traded songs with them.

It was weird.

Alli With An I were the Motley Crue of North Carolina.

Never have I met a group of guys who possessed such an ability to consume copius amounts of alcohol.

One fateful night my freshman year they invited me to attend an after party behind Hillsborough St. Being a wide eyed Freshman this seemed totally unreal. Long story short (ha ha), the night ended on the roof of some house near Wachovia and we had to jump to a tree beligerantly drunk in order to climb down. I remember waking up with these phantom scratches all over my body.

These are the positive experiences I will take away from my time at NCSU.

==

And Darkest Hour,

I recently bought their compilation of B-Sides and such called "Archives?" Maybe that is the wrong name. Either way I forced myself to listen through it and it was complete garbage other than the acoustic track. DH has been the one band where I consistently buy their merch. I think this all stems from them selling guitar tab books along w/ guitar dvds done by kris norris. more bands should do this.

these are all for very different reasons...some, for the aesthetic affect they've had on me, others for their role in shaping a lot of the ways i perceive the world, etc etc yadda yadda. i won't bother to delve into each band, though.

1. Hum
2. Deftones (especially around 16-18)
3. The Appleseed Cast
4. Sage Francis (HUGELY around 21-22)
5. The Police
6. At the Drive-In
7. Beloved (cracked open my frightful romance with hardcore, which lasted maybe 2 years)
8. Neil Young
9. Talking Heads
10. Far

honorable mention.... Led Zeppelin.

I struck through the numbers of artists that I don't even listen to anymore, but along the lines of changing me in some way, I still listed them for posterity.

1. The Smashing Pumpkins
2. Type O Negative
3. Metallica
4. Dismantled
5. Blink 182 (Cheshire Cat, Dude Ranch, Enema of the State era)
6. 2Pac (just don't listen much anymore, but never would be into rap/hip-hop w/o him)
7. El-P
8. Sarah McLachlan
9. Richard D James/Aphex Twin/et al.
10. Bauhaus/Peter Murphy

1. Radiohead
2. Godspeed! You! Black! Emperor!
3. Mogwai
4. Microphones
5. Smashing Pumpkins
6. The Beatles
7. Pink Floyd

Cant really think of anymore. Radiohead by far at #1 and the last 6 are just as I thought of them. Dont really listen to the last 3 anymore though.

some of these are because of the doors they opened to me to find other bands thus they were 'indirectly' inspiring, and others because they were my favorite band for an extended period of time, and still others because of being a favorite live band of mine. whatever the reason, here they are off the top of my head at this moment in time:

1. deftones- first band i ever REALLY got into (6th grade, just after the whole green day and nirvana listening i did in elementary school)

2. between the buried and me - like reed said, saw them live in charlotte and thought, wow this is fun.

3. beloved - inspired me both as people and musicians in NC, a favorite live band

4. hopesfall - (original band, including frailty of words, nowingstospeakof, and the *recording* of satellite years...nothing beyond that)

5. nirvana - bleach and nevermind were the first cds i learned to play all the way through in middle school

6. smashing pumpkins - siamese dream will forever remain one of the best CDs ever released

7. foo fighters - see #6..and replace siamese dream with 'colour and the shape'

8. this runs through - such a small band..with only an EP out. but as ppl along with the music they did a lot for me

9. thursday - gosh i dont even listen to these guys anymore...but they opened a huge window for me when i first picked up 'waiting' wayyyy back

10. this last spot is a mishmash of any band that has seriously influenced me at any moment in my writing... radiohead/tool/old underoath/minorthreat/suicidemachines/furtherseemsforever/deathcab/getupkids...etcetc

NIN
Garbage
Pixies
The Smiths/Morrissey
KMFDM (more a political influence than a musical one, but still belongs in my top 10 music-wise)
Stereolab
Depeche Mode
Siouxsie and the Banshees
REM
Smashing Pumpkins

I'd have to include ska and punk as genres on here, as they shaped who I was until around the time I hit college

i knew this would happen.

i've since read posts after mine that reflected some things I had forgotten.

ie, my love affair with Siamese Dream, my shameful neglect of Radiohead, and what the Foo Fighters' album The Colour and The Shape meant to me as a high school junior.

this rounds out my top 14. and you can shuffle it on any given day.

oh bloody fuck, Cake, Weezer and Beck. Especially Cake. When I was about 20-22, there was a time when I listened to Cake and Weezer (all Cake, Blue and Pinkerton) about 80% of the time.

I hate myself.

see, I'm no good at these threads.

Arrgh.

Also, there was a point at which I had basically the entire Nirvana catalog memorized from a guitar standpoint, and that led to Pixies.

I also have to say the Kleptones, who have consistently blown my mind for going on two years now. I like all sorts of mashups and hacked up music (the first mashup record I ever got was Kid606's The Action Packed Mentallist Brings You the Fucking Jams), and stuff like the Avalanches with a million different things going on is cool, but the Kleptones really make me re-imagine shit that I know inside-out, which is ridiculous and fantastic.

If we are talking about who I am today and what music I have been into the last 5 or 6 years then it starts in middle school and skips a 4 year cloud in highschool/early college...

chronological...

1) Smashing Pumpkins. Before them it was mostly hair bands and then grunge bands. When I got Siamese Dream in middle school the album was far and away the most complex rock album i had ever heard. 13 years later it clearly stands the test of time.

2) The Beatles. This is a tricky choice because it lead me down to roads. In high school it helped spill me into the hippie culture but then it helped drag me out a few years down the road in college. When the dust had settled, it was quite clear I had an answer to the cliche party question "Who is your favorite band?"

3) Pavement. Its hard to decide whether the beatles or pavement were more influential but I have to give the distinction to pavement. Listening to pavement records my first semester of sophomore year completely changed the course of my life. I didnt happen overnight and it took months to fully digest what I was hearing but when it was over every band i would listen to from then till now can be traced back to discovering the pavement catalogue.

4) Olivia Tremor Control. This is probably the last band I can look at and call influential at this point. They werent the first band off elephant 6 that I bought a record of (Apples in Stereo) but they were a band that in my opinion produced 2 of the finest albums of the last 20 years. They gave me no choice but to investigate every single elephant 6 band in case more treasure was out there. They lead me to the Neutral Milk Hotel and Beulah and countless other indie pop bands that i adore so much
