Well I've finished a great deal of hours at state in my major but I'm trying to transfer. I want to go to an out of state school but I don't know where. I am not concerned with price that much as long as its warm, friendly, big campus, and under 20K. I work right know and take some classes but I need a change. I've lived here for about 18 years and its getting old. I've got allot of drive for transfering and I know the consequences. I just need some idea where I should go. I'm looking at FSU, UF, USF, UCLA, USC, and some other schools. I know some of them are up there in price but as long as I can start over and make a life of my own. That is what matters. So anyhow you heard my story and everything, any suggestions? Experience? 11/26/2006 10:55:26 PM |

I'm Biochem major, was in BME and Electrical. I lost my scholorship, and had a tough few years with allot of things. I just need a change with oppurtunity and I want to transfer to a school which is worth it. In general it has great standing like state and it can help me not just a degree but a job. Thanks for the help!!! 11/26/2006 11:13:17 PM |

Biochemistry at ncsu is top notch and the hardest life science major here. It'll be hard to find many schools with a better program thats for sure.

NCSU has an interinstitutional program with some local schools. It lets you take any class NCSU doesn’t offer, that the other school does, by only paying ncsu tuition. For example I took some archaeology stuff at UNC because state doesn’t offer any.
It’s not the same experience as transferring, but the Chapel Hill/Carrboro liberalness, college town feel, and small town feel are all different than Raleigh NC’s multi-college larger town/capital feel.
Doing M W F at state and a few classes T Th at UNC can make for a diverse semester, atleast until whatever transfer stuff goes through.
I believe the interinstitutional stuff probably also works with duke, but I didn’t get a chance to try it in my 4 years since I graduated earlier this year.
Between online classes/interinstitutional, you could avoid setting foot on NCSU campus for a semester if you just needed a break. 11/27/2006 12:14:04 AM |

Great school for this major but I won't stop at my BS in Biochem, I plan to do something in healthcare. I may get a job for a year or so but its not my final stop. Also its under 20K in price inclusive but I mean a few thousand extra will not kill me. I know after the first year I will be paying instate and that sound much better. I can go to UNC CH and I'll be honest it would be a change but not big enough to help me focus. I know I need a big change. I love it in this area b/c its a comfort zone but I got to step away to actually experience and grow. - Thanks 11/27/2006 12:47:26 AM |

If you want information on USF, I'd be happy to answer any questions. I used to go there, and still have a lot of freinds there, as well. I might actually be moving back to Tampa next summer. I'm a fan of the area.
Just shoot me a PM. 11/27/2006 12:48:40 AM |

I would suggest dropping a line to Virtual Advising in person (i.e. wolfeee) to get some more information. http://www.ncsu.edu/advising_central/.
IMHO, transferring to another school just because you aren't 100% happy with the local area isn't a good reason. You'll have another 50 years or so to grow and expand ... spend the next 2-3 finishing up your degree at a top institute ... won't kill ya to stay that much longer will it? 11/27/2006 2:59:23 AM |

First, any school out of state will be way over 20k because of how they treat out of state people. There are a few colleges (that are worth going to) that don't do this but I think you might just need a break.
Go to part-time and get a co-op. You don't want to leave NCSU if you're a junior or higher. 11/27/2006 7:32:36 AM |

if the USC you're referring to is southern cal, it's private and way over your 20k mark (cost likely comparable to duke)
if you were talking about south carolina, then nevermind...
also, out-of-state tuition and fees at a UC (i.e. UCLA) will likely be ~25k -- then you need to figure in room and board, etc for southern california (not cheap)
keep in mind, too, that the UCs (except for berkeley) are on a quarter system rather than semester like NCSU 11/27/2006 8:29:25 AM |

If you think you'll magically get in-state after the first year, dream on. I have lived in NC for 4 years and my parents have a house here and I am STILL paying $25,000 a year. Basically, do not count on it. Other states might be more benevolent, but the tuition people in NC are asshats.
Also, the cost of living around UCLA will be vastly different from Raleigh, have you taken that into account? Or, if you lost your scholarship here, what makes you think you'll have good enough grades to transfer? None of the schools you mentioned are slack.
I'm not trying to be a bitch, just realistic. And at this point you're sounding very unrealistic and a little whiny. 11/27/2006 12:55:51 PM |

I'm not sure what your story is, but if you're well into the program (ie Jr), I think you'd probably be better off staying here for another year. Trust me on this - I transfered a few times in undergrad and it took forever to finally get the degree. It's a hell of alot easier to just stay in one place if it's tolerable. The program here is well regarded, and re-making contacts at a new school is a pain in the ass.
You can always travel and mess around afterward, but transferring is a momentum-sucker. Shit - I've thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail and paddled the Mississippi River http://sourcetosea.net/, got a masters degree, and started a PhD in the six years since actually finishing my undergrad. Too bad it took 12 years to actually get that undergrad. 11/27/2006 1:36:28 PM |

Have you considered UNCW? Moving 2 hours away is plenty to start your life over, its a great school, and it won't cost so damn much. It's got an awsome atmosphere, and is in a beach town. What more can you want? 11/27/2006 5:31:23 PM |
