Okay I'm sitting playing WoW and some guy starts spamming the channels with the lord and savior crap. I'm all for people celebrating their religion but not over a fantasy game. Someone says over the channel "Christianity versus WoW discuss". Here's my response

"They're both fantasies, they both have a monthly fee, both have PVP, but if jesus was a mage he could have blinked away when that guy stabbed him with the spear".

Continue the hillarity!

Lame idea for a SB thread, but funny nonetheless. Evangelists need to save their saving for some other time.

lock suspend? This is nothing compared to some of the other posts on this messageboard. Save your troll bait for more worthy of locking.

I'd say this is a pretty lockable thread. Threads aiming for the funny must be of Titanic Quality or better.

NEDM makes this thread good enough to fuck on a dead bear.
/internets cliches.

Maybe not so much versus WoW but I could see where someone with strong religious (not necessarily Christian) feelings could roll a character based on that as if they were some kind of holy warrior. The problem comes when they make sure everyone in the LFG channel knows it.

I throw out my standard thoughts on religion first incase this becomes a real thread. You don't have to read it if you don't want to, as is the case with anything posted on this site. But if I don't preface with this, then later on in the discussion someone is bound to make the claim I just have "faith, but in agnosticism or atheism, instead of a specific religion" or that its all just feelings and you can't try to make a rational point. I atleast want to make it clear that I have reasons for what I think rather than just saying “this is what I think.”

The son of the Almighty God, and one associated with resurrection. Apollo. The one from the religion where a woman causes the downfall of man (Pandora), and the surviving pious couple have to repopulate the world (Deucalion story), the religion of immaculately conceived demi-gods who come back from the dead (Theseus, Hercules), and the one where gods do water to wine type magic (Athena & Dionysus, where the story actually represents the cultures achievement of creating wine as a way of preserving fruit nutrients throughout winter). The one where babies are abandoned or sent down rivers, and later come back as leaders (Oedipus). Why does the Vatican store pictures of Apollo that later artists used as a base on how to depict Jesus, why does every modern hospital, ambulance, and medical facility have the staff of Aesculapius (the Greek symbol associated with acts of healing and resurrection)? Because these are stock type characters that you’ll find in Zoroastrianism and the stories of Gilgamesh (had a great flood, flooding was a part of farming which is a big part of ancient life) and countless other myths before and after Jesus came on scene. And these stock type literary characters represent cultural achievements, physical migrations of people, economic changes, and people’s hopes and desires. Yahweh seems no different than any of the gods who came before him or after him.

Here's that sketch based of time, location, and other descriptions of what Jesus probably actually looked like, if he is a real historical figure and not just myth. And his birth is celebrated around pagan holidays with pagan traditions like bringing a tree in your house rather than at a more likely time of his birth.

All the problems with fate & freewill, with evil, with all the supernatural vs science, it all goes away and is just like every other older religion (mythology) and foreign religion, which we believe all to be false, and Jesus/Yawheh start to make sense as a literary character the same way all the others do.
-------

I play a game called runescape (a java based game that cannot compare to wow graphically) message_topic.aspx?topic=440575, that is set in a polthiestic fantasy world. Polytheistic fantasy world. Different alignments with different gods change quest outcomes and other abilities in the game, but sometimes alignment discussions become people trying to convert people to Yawheh/Jesusism. I agree that online multiplayer games aren't the best forum for discussion of religion, although I also feel the more open discussion the better. But more in line with the thread, I enjoy casting spells related to specific gods in the game mentioned above to kill other people and then pointing out that yawheh must be a noob in this world to have no spells or prayers. It’s not really "continuing the hilarity" but it can be mildly amusing in game as you’re opponents are consumed in flames.

Christianity versus WoW Democracy
Monarchy, King vs voices of many

Polytheism, while not democracy, thrived around the inventors of democracy and was a religion based on many viewpoints and incorporating important gods & thus voices from those around them.

I put this in Soap Box because it was basically comparing organized religion to a pay per month video game.

It's a thought provoking and very interesting arguement... at least to me. I wanted people to defend religion as well as make comparisons I hadn't thought of. It's humorous but serious at the same time.

Posting it in chit chat would get completely off subject responses including pictures of genetalia...etc. I wanted it to be at least a semblance of the original idea.
